More Common Therapy: The Experiential Therapy of Jeffrey K. Zeig, Ph.D. by Robert Staffin

Read Online and Download More Common Therapy: The Experiential Therapy of Jeffrey K. Zeig, Ph.D. by Robert Staffin. Writing a book is a daunting task. One has to be really motivated. Dr. Staffin’s debut is the result of being highly motivated … to further disseminate the work of Jeffrey Zeig, to celebrate what he learned in his 17 years of study with Dr. Zeig, and to make accessible what is too often chalked up to the charisma or particularity of the teacher. Culling from the live encounters that took place in the NYC Masterclass, Dr. Staffin is meticulous in his investigation of Zeig’s artistry as it comes through the actual sessions. The hope is that readers will walk away with fresh insight into this experiential way of working — and inspiration for expanding their own ways.

More Common Therapy: The Experiential Therapy of Jeffrey K. Zeig, Ph.D. by Robert Staffin Review

Thank you for this gem of a book, “More Common Therapy: The Experiential Psychotherapy of Jeffrey K Zeig, Ph.D.” Truly and really a terrific book! I have already given away a copy of this book to a therapist colleague. It’s that inspiring. It’s a book that is personal. I feel like I’m getting to know both the author and Jeffrey Zeig on this enjoyable and uplifting journey. And Zeig’s experiential psychotherapy in Robert Staffin’s telling, is indeed a journey of creativity, flexibility, and playfulness. As a student of improv and play, both in life and in psychotherapy, there are some areas that stand out for me in reading Staffin’s book (by the way, what a great title, playfully referencing Jay Haley’s classic “Uncommon Therapy”). Some of the gems that captured my imagination: Wordplay (terrific!); Use of metaphors; Mirroring and beaming/Attunement; Strategic communication; Multilevel communication (amazingly rich throughout the book); Utilization (my favorite concept in this book, so similar to the improv concept of “Yes, and”).This book contains so many nuggets of inspiration. It is indeed a book to be utilized in many different ways by therapists in their work, and also by people generally in their lives. How often can you say that about a book?Christer LarssonCambridge, MA

More Common Therapy: The Experiential Therapy of Jeffrey K. Zeig, Ph.D. is both captivating in topic and it’s beautifully written narrative. Though clinicians will gain important therapeutic information to be used in practice, it is also as effective for the lay person like myself. Hypnosis is a subject that holds fascination, mystery and some misunderstanding. Dr. Staffin gently and clearly unwraps these aspects and leaves the reader informed, comforted, interested and enriched. I will be rereading and sharing More Common Therapy:The Experiential Therapy of Jeffrey K. Zeig,Ph.D. and hope that Dr. Robert Staffin will write even more in the future. Fantastic Book !!!!!

More Common Therapy is more than just a book about one of the most well-known and respected psychotherapists of this generation, it’s essentially a deconstruction of the methods that have made Dr. Zeig the true master that he is.By breaking them down into such an easily understandable and digestible way, Dr. Staffin almost invites the reader to consider using these techniques and strategies in their own practice. Or, at the very least, offer a way to reframe one’s own techniques. The book is divided into 51 short but detailed observations and descriptions of Dr. Zeig’s methods. I very much liked that I could pick the book up and due to the short, concise and very descriptive chapters would walk away with techniques and ideas that I could apply to my own practice (as could anyone of all different levels of experience) in just a few minutes. For example, in the Chapter “Being Permissive”, Dr. Staffin explains what this means, the value of it and how Dr. Zeig uses it (being permissive) within therapy. All of this in 3 pages. And after reading it in a matter of minutes, one is left to contemplate whether it’s a worthwhile technique to use within their own practice. And one need not be a practitioner to utilize this technique – we all can apply it, and so many other techniques within the book, to ourselves.More Common Therapy is, at least for me, a “must”.

“More Common Therapy” is written for people who wish to have a greater understanding and feel for the experiential psychotherapy of Jeffery K. Zeig. As an experienced student of Zeig’s master training classes, Robert Staffin provides an intelligent exposition of complex therapeutic devices demonstrated by Zeig, such as utilization, spread activation, heightened response attentiveness, and seeding—to name a few. As Staffin states, this book is at its core, a teaching tool that seeks to capture and convey the essence of hypnotically informed, experiential psychotherapy. Staffin makes the point that the aim of this approach to hypnotherapy is to “elicit and harness the skills and resources that people already possess with the intent of applying them to the issues and conflicts that bring them to treatment.” This attitude of respect for others and humility in estimating one’s own importance is reflected in every page. For example, Staffin argues that, “Our goal as clinicians is not to be right but to assist the people with whom we work to arrive at solutions that are aligned with who they are and that have meaning for them” (p. 158). If you are interested in a client-centered approach to experientially-based therapy, read this book.
