The Memorandum: A True Story of Justice Forged from Fire by Robert W. Kelley Review

The first chapter is so hard to get through without crying. I went back and read it again after I finished the book and cried even harder the second time. What this family went through was so harrowing and awful- as a nurse who has seen firsthand how horrible recovery from burn injuries can be the story of what happened stays with me even now as I watch patients receive debridements and therapies to recover- I think about the Murphy family- especially Matt. This story is SO good- I finished it in two days and truly looked forward to reading it when I got home and was bummed to put it down when I was forced to do something else. I stayed up late finishing chapters and hung onto every word. Kelley did some super badass moves to win this case and his legal expertise and fearlessness when it comes to fighting for his clients shows- he is clearly an excellent lawyer and very good, compelling writer as well. You can tell he really cares and I love that. I’ve bought this book for several of my nurse friends since- the medical side is well researched and presented and the legal side is really interesting for us as well. 10/10 recommend this book- it’s a gripping read!

Good God, probably the best book I have ever read, and I have 70 years of experience reading books.I Worked for Mr. Kelley’s dad, and my wife was cross examined by him in a law suit he had brought against the school board, for which she worked.Mr. Kelley’s facility with the English language is awe inspiring. His descriptions bring Matt alive again. The behavior of General Motors in this matter is reprehensible, and Mr. Kelley and Uustal brought their duplicity into the open in spite of GM’s best efforts to keep it covered up.Considering how well he writes, as is demonstrated in this book, he might want to re-consider his career choice. However, that would deprive the world of a great plaintiff’s attorney, which the world probably needs more.

I loved this book. I picked up this book on a recent Saturday afternoon and read the entire book in a day.I was completely captivated by this good versus evil story that took me on a journey that started so tragically that you knew that there could not possibly be a good ending – but perhaps a just one.The horrific accident happens in the first pages of the book; the balance is spent making some kind of sense of it all. The players couldn’t be farther apart, a middle class family and a global corporation, General Motors, who decided to play God.Thankfully there are good people out there that will go the extra mile to make sure that corporations that callously measure everything in dollars are one day brought to justice. The journey here was nothing short of fascinating as you are taken through years of getting to the truth, in spite of enormous odds and plenty of hurdles constantly being tossed in by the very rich bad guys. With some crazy good luck and a brilliantly talented team of attorneys and staff, the good guys prevail. There is no happy ending in a story as tragic as this one, but when the bad guys end up paying for selfish, heartless decisions, there is some sense of justice.Bob Kelley did a great job telling this moving story. I found myself thinking about it over and over again for the next several days - always the sign of a good book to me.

This book traces a case brought against GM for negligently failing to provide a shield for an auto fuel tank that resulted in a fuel fire following a minor fender bender. The resulting fire caused the horrible death of a boy and nearly as horrible injuries to others. Assuming the author, the plaintiffs' lawyer, is truthful (and I have little doubt that he is), GM denied liability, stonewalled demands for discovery. and basically forced its employees to perjure themselves. It's a very upsetting tale of corporate greed and dishonesty. It's an upsetting and interesting book, but it's really quite amateurishly written. Robert Kelley is a great trial lawyer, but not a great writer, and he spends too much time talking about personal matters in a way that interrupts his narrative and makes the book a bit too much about him rather than his clients. Even the portions covering the case are a bit too simplistic. Perhaps, as a lawyer, I didn't; need all the explanations he provided, but they detracted from the main subject he tells.

I started this book as part of my quarantine reading list, and I could not put it down. The author takes you on the exhaustive journey with him, his team, and most importantly, the victims. I was on this journey along with them throughout this book; I felt the pain, suffering, trials, and tribulations. This is a must read for all attorneys, law students, and really anyone with an interest in what actually happens inside a courtroom. It made me review my life as a former practicing attorney, and the impact of my life and career. Bob showed us that these cases do not occur in a vacuum—we see it all— the hardships of the victims, the legal battles for the attorneys, and all the struggles that occur while the machine of the system rolls along. This book was beautifully written and you could tell that Bob Kelley cares deeply about his clients and his purpose in life. This book just hits differently, and I would highly recommend it!
