Beware of Hypocrisy was written to explain why this trend is dangerous, and to encourage Christians to study the New Testament, especially the Gospels, themselves.After almost two thousand years of making assumptions and inventing doctrines, churches have subtly changed, over time, the teachings of Jesus into something different from what is presented in the Scriptures. This will be demonstrated by analyzing the teachings of Jesus regarding a given topic as presented in the Bible, and then contrasting it with what churches teach and do regarding the subject. The book concludes with encouragement from hope in the Word of the Lord. In addition, techniques for studying the Bible are presented, along with recommendations on Bible translations, online Bibles, and Bible apps.Robert Waligurski is a senior design engineer at Safran, designing the interiors of Boeing and Airbus aircraft. He has a physics degree from the University of Illinois and three graduate degrees in engineering from the University of Southern California. He has held faculty positions at Chapman University College and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He has spent over twenty years researching the Bible and ancient manuscripts, seeking the truth about God, Jesus, humankind, and reality.

It is often difficult to accept criticism about ourselves, or groups we belong to. While the book could easily have filled volumes for available, legitimate, criticisms of the modern church, Dr. Waligurski focuses in on some of the most damning and endemic problems with the modern church. Don't be fooled by people saying "aren't we all hypocrites?" because we are not. We may be sinners, we may be broken, and we are, hopefully, saved, but a hypocritical Christian is an oxymoron. Many of Jesus' teachings use the hypocrites' actions as examples of what not to do. It is impossible to be both a hypocrite and a Christian, if you don't understand that, you need to look up the definition of "hypocrite".The plain and simple fact is that the modern church is in no way what Christ intended. That should be apparent to anyone who has bothered to read the teachings and commands of Jesus. The sooner we all wake up to that fact, the sooner God will work through us to restore His Church. Consider this book a wake up call to stop making excuses for the evil your church is doing in Christ's name.

An excellent book that I think all Christians should read! I am impressed by the perspective given in this short, but informative book about how the churches have evolved into what they are today.

Waligurski, Robert, Beware of Hypocrisy: Who is Teaching Us What? (Eugene, OR: Resource Publications, 2019) Robert Waligurski is a design engineer, with no background in theology or biblical studies, who has published a 60 page pamphlet filled with heated attacks, angry complaints, and incoherent ramblings against the Catholic Church specifically, and the world-wide Church generally. The first warning sign is the bibliography; of only twelve sources, four are taken from internet sites, a few are general reference materials, and the source that is quoted most often is a twenty-six year old book entitled The Christian Conspiracy by David L. Moore., which forms the backbone of Waligurski’s work. Waligurski compiles eleven short chapters in an attempt to dismantle traditional Christian doctrine. From infallibility and Christology to prayer and indulgences, Waligurski spares no opportunity to take a cheap shot at the Catholic Church. Waligurski’s primary argument is that the Church has altered the scriptural meaning of most major tenets of faith.He starts with a cursory summary of some major events in the history of the Church, with a goal of undermining the Church’s authority. Each following chapter focuses on one area of teaching and how the Church has been wrong in its interpretation. Chapter two attacks Papal Infallibility. A list of bullet points, highlighting decisions where one Pope reversed the decision of a previous Pope, serves as enough evidence for Waligurski that Papal Infallibility is a farce. Chapter three takes issue with Christology, and Waligurski goes as far as denying the divinity of Christ (14), and claiming that this primary tenant of the Christian faith was merely an invention of the early Church. In the chapter on prayer, Waligurski acknowledges that Catholics do not actually pray to Mary, per official doctrine, but that most common laypersons do not know the difference and therefore the official doctrine dos not matter, and the Church is responsible (17-18). Waligurski takes almost three pages to speak against paintings and statues of any sort within the Church, arguing that, because nobody knows what Jesus actually looked like, all of the images of him are certainly inaccurate depictions and therefore sinful. Any painting or statue of anyone other than Jesus is certainly the equivalent of idol worship (20-21). Chapters six through eight continue the rant against common practices of the Church, but chapter nine stands out from the rest; Waligurski actually argues that the Church has not gone far enough to discipline women for adultery (36) but that men should not have to be held accountable (31-32). After spending the entire book, up to this point, repeatedly pointing out the Church’s deviation from scripture (and arguing specifically for a plain reading of scripture without the Church’s twisted interpretations) he changes course completely when he comes across a verse that he does not like himself: Matthew 19:9. Although Jesus plainly says that a man that divorces and remarries commits adultery, and a man who marries a divorcee commits adultery, Waligurski rationalizes his view by claiming that the Matthean text could be wrong and Jesus only “may” have said this, because the account in Mark does not contain the same wording (31). Waligurski’s final two chapters continue the rant by complaining about how terrible modern day churches are (47) and finally claiming that a personal, private study of scripture is the only hope that remains for faithful Christians. Waligurski makes some wild arguments, with zero evidence, and shows less than a cursory knowledge of the scriptures he accuses the Church of ignoring. This book is nothing more than the ranting of a man angry with a Church that he apparently feels has wronged him. It is not worth the hour that it takes to sit down and read. That was my son's response to seeing the cover of this book. Fundamentalist Robert Walingurski has written what is essentially a book report citing most notably the work of David L. Moore, Christian Conspiracy, How the Teachings of Christ have been Altered by Christianity, 1994.Citing John 5:14, the author states, "Avoid sin because it pollutes your mind...hurts your soul, causes diseases, interferes with your relationship with God, and hurts others more than we can imagine." (p. 53) I doubt anyone would agree that a five year old who suffers from leukemia has committed any sin that would cause him or his family such grave suffering.But I do agree that "[O]nce a church permits a sin for one individual, the sin usually becomes a part of that church's doctrine, permitting others to commit the sin seemingly guilt free." (p. x) The Catholic Church's sexual abuse scandal certainly applies here. Sexual predators have not been removed from the Church; they remain hidden and have been empowered by bishops who refuse to hold them accountable. The Church thinks its apology is enough to mitigate all the damage done to its victims, and we should all get over it. This is not Christ's message of love.So how does one resolve this? As Paul states in 1 Corinthians 12: For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ." We are not perfect. We bear witness to One who dwells within us, unchanging; and through Him all things come together. He is beyond the structures we create, and our ability to unite ourselves to Him does not, thankfully, depend on one's religion.I recommend the works of Thomas Merton, Augustine's Confessions, and Teresa of Avila to anyone who seeks a deeper relationship with Him.This book was reviewed as a member of Mike Morrell's Speakeasy group.
