When a man and woman get married they usually have to leave some of their old habits behind and Bill Scott of The 1800 Club and Shirley Holmes are no different. However, when some of Shirley’s ‘work’ tries to interfere in not one, but two centuries things start out with a bang.

Time Travel Adventures Of The 1800 Club: Book 18 by Robert McAuley Review

If you are looking at reviews for book five, then you have likely read some of the others by now. It is not necessary to read them in order, but some of the commentary and people met may have been introduced earlier on. As with the others, these stories are not amazing, but they are fun to read. I do recommend them if you like the idea of time travel and history. How fun! I have a soft spot for time travel AND historical accuracy (well, for the most part), and these stories take you places. they are not overly detailed (which can be good or bad depending on what you are looking for), but they do spend some time on the historic side of the story. You will learn something, or at least have your memory refreshed on some historical events.I find that these are simply fun, quick books. Not too deep, not too developed, yet somehow just informative enough to learn a little something each time. Each book has two stories and follow a formula. There are 3 times lines that we get introduced to (current, future, then a trip to the past). Each story is about someone from an exclusive group in present time being contacted by a group in the future with instructions to go back to a point in history (typically the 1800s) for the purpose of making sure an event happens as we know it. The premise is that technology within the future has detected that somehow something happened (or didn't happen) as it was supposed to, and that would alter history as we know it, as well as present time, and future times. Neat premise. Enjoyable.I love when food, clothing, the streets, smells and other sights are described.

I so badly wanted to enjoy this book. The premise is great, especially for someone who loves history and sci-fi. The idea of an 1800 Club where the members must dress and talk as if they are in the 1860's at each meeting is great. And then when it's determined that the club is just a front for a time machine that allows certain members (the members generally have no idea of the time machine) to go back in time and fix things that go off the tracks in the time line. I was really excited. However the book lacked depth and history. No details. The first trip is back to the 1860's to give the Gettysburg address as President Lincoln ended up not doing. This changed everything for the war and the future of America. The problem is that the author skipped over so much that would have been great to include. Imagine a lover of history getting to go back and live in the 1860's. The things they would see, hear, and feel during that time would have been incredible. However the story moved very quickly. No comment about the changes to the White House between that time and the present. No comments about how easy it was to access in those days. And then to have a 30 minute conversation to President Lincoln and provide ZERO details as to what was discussed. It was a major let down. This story moved very quickly with just the major pieces and then it was on to the next one. This even alone could have made for an entire book, and one that was much longer than this one. But there was no excitement, no details of the towns and how things looked in those days. It just moved too fast.I read the 2nd one as well and had the same impression. So I think I'll stop now. So much promise with these, but no results.

I stumbled upon the '1800 Club' series via the onscreen list that appears (scroll down from your current selection) titled 'Inspired by your Browsing History.' That algorithm works pretty good sometimes.I've read Book 1, then subsequently 2 & 3. I'm just about to start Book 4 and I must say, I'm enjoying this series very much. Yes - it can be a bit naïve or adolescent at times. Yes - it's not exactly what you would call gritty. Yes - it certainly isn't 'hard' Sci-Fi. Yes - there are some inaccuracies and logic holes here and there. Yes - I'm wondering if the author must've been on a diet and trying to cut back on his drinking and smoking when writing these, because the characters are always tucking in to great dinners and then relaxing with old brandy and fine cigars. But you know what? It just doesn't matter! These are extremely entertaining. If you're a Time Travel junkie, as I am, then let go of some of your perhaps ingrained preconceptions and just go with the flow. They're really a lot of fun.And (maybe the best recommendation I could give)... I'd sure like to be one of those guys.Update to review:I'm currently up to Book 10. These are quick, easy reads. I’ve enjoyed them very much. The author’s penchant for describing in great detail his characters’ period-correct clothing and for reciting the entire (!) menu presented at any of the meals they partake of is, indeed, of great interest - for a while. It’s the details that help the reader follow along with the character’s wonder and excitement at actually being able to experience the very time periods in which they feel so attracted to.Perhaps the charm of the series is wearing thin, but I’m beginning to get a little fed up with the sameness of the stories. I totally understand if the author chooses to not start mutating the books into strange directions, just because he might feel pressured to. He may well like them just the way they are and doesn’t feel the need to shake things up! But, yes, I would like just a smidgeon more intricacy…
