Carlota la gitanita, the heroine of this book, is the wonderful example of the closed Clan of Gitanos and it’s integration into the Spanish culture of the era. This book has something for everyone that reads it, and wherever your inquisitive path is for information.Author Ms Vargas, has done a marvelous job of depicting through the chapters of this book, the serious conflicts of cultural assimilation, traditions, mores of society, love, history, wars, sorrows, prejudice, and power. Also how these affect the nucleus of a family in its transition into another cultural society with its possible repercussions, and the benefits of Integrating fully into other cultural ideologies with the education foundations needed for their children, and future generations.Extra good read, and If you get the messages in English, you will get them in Spanish too. In either of the languages you choose, you will enjoy this delightful story.LOVE transcends TIME and SPACE 💛
In this book we are given a glimpse into the gypsy family customs, while the background of the Spanish Civil War provides an uncanny relevance to our current socio-political reality. Endearing characters pull us into their story and show the best and worst of humanity.
Awesome read, if you haven't read it ,it's definitely a must read!
The character's in Echoes of My Clan are wonderfully drawn in this epic story of the Roma people told with pride and understanding beyond what can be found in other "articles" and portrayals of Gypsy's that I've seen over the years. I had no idea of the origin of Gypsies/Romas and was only vaguely aware of the social isolation and genocide attempted on them during Franco's regime and WWII. That said, this is not a story of despair...rather it is a tale of the epic journey of a young girl, her family, her loves, her courage and her mantra...to live in the moment. This author's voice is so very special, the cadence of this translation bringing us an auditory as well as visual perception of the events and people who populate her book. The small issues of English language usage that will benefit from further editing are nothing, compared to how well we readers gain a sense of the culture and focus of these fascinating people. Perhaps we should all join a Caravan and experience the kind of love, support and community portrayed here. I also obtained a hard copy of the book (see the photo) at the Miami International Book Fair and am delighted to have met the author there, and been "welcomed" to her clan!
I happened onto a book signing at a small book store in my neighborhood and met the author and bought her book. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the read. Reality shows don't do gypsy life any justice! There should be some type TV special that highlights gypsy life based off this book. Very interesting!
