Best of Cryptograms: 450 Large Print Puzzles to Flex Your Brain by Rockridge Press Review
The last thing you need in a cryptogram is a typo, but this book has lots of them. Other reviewers have mentioned how many puzzles are missing their first letter. Another refers to the title of a movie as "On The Raod" (sic). One entire puzzle, including the name of the author, was printed in clear, not the cryptogram. Anybody editing this book should have caught these mistakes.On a personal note, I hated that the puzzles were grouped in categories such as music, books, historical, etc. This made the solutions too easy. For example in the historical category, after you've solved two words as ". . . breathe free", what else can it be but the inscription on the Statue of Liberty? Of "Of all the gin joints . . . " These statements are way too well known to make good puzzles, and I found them extremely disappointing. There's just no point to working really hard to find a starting point and then having the whole puzzle solved with just a few letters discovered.Also, using quotes from movies meant there were a lot of slang "words" such as coulda (been a contender) and gonna. Again, when you're working hard to solve a puzzle, looking at ABCCD is not going to call "gonna" to mind, is it? Steep or blood or witty or queen or a million other words, but not "gonna".I too liked the large print and there was enough value to the book that I didn't heave it across the room. But my tolerance for incompetence is low and these slovenly mistakes have no place in this kind of book.
It's difficult when letters or words are missing. Clearly, no one proofread this book before sending it to print. Even some of the clues are incorrect (example, they tell you D=X as your clue when in fact D=I. I would send this back but I've written in it so I can't. I won't buy from this publisher again. Keep looking for a different book if you're in to Cryptograms.
I have only completed a couple of pages in this book and have already found two mistakes. For instance, one of the movies quotes is supposed to say, “My momma always said, Life is like a box of chocolates.†But the cryptogram solution is mistakenly written as, “A momma always said, Life is like a box of chocolates.†This is frustrating and makes the puzzle a good deal harder to solve. I would not recommend this book to friends until the mistakes are fixed. Copyright date is 2019.
I have been ordering Cryptogram books for five years now, and this is the best one I have ordered to date. I do at least a dozen cryptograms every day to keep my brain active in retirement, and simply, because I'm addicted to them.I loved this book for several reasons:1. The selection of quotes was great. I especially loved the categories of "Lines from Movies", "Artists, Musicians & Actors" and "Authors, Writers & Reporters".2. All of the quotes had the author, book title, or movie, etc. cited. The last book I completed did not have any references cited, so many of them did not make sense out of context.3. The type is large and the lines are well-spaced.4. All of the punctuation, including apostrophes are present (except for a few periods at the end of the quotes). I have done a few books that did not use apostrophes for any contractions.5. The quotes are adequate in length to make it enjoyable. I have had some books that liked to throw in a lot of short quotes with less than 8 words, making it a guessing game.A couple of things that could be corrected:1. There are maybe 20 or so quotes that are missing the very first letter.2. I prefer the pages be perfed for easy tear-out.3. I wish that the letters were spaced with equal spacing like a typewriter, so that you have as much space allowed for an "I" as you do for a "G", etc.I went back online to see if Rockridge Press had any other Cryptogram books available, but did not find any. This one was published in 2019, so I hope they publish one in 2020 with similar format.
The only aspect of this book that I felt gave good information was the introductions. Otherwise, it was poorly organized and I found 26 errors which were comprised of missing characters, and not coding the quote. The book was supposed to be large print, however the copyright page was fine print, the answer pages were small print and the puzzle pages did not offer enough room between the letters to comfortably write the letters decoding the encrypted statement. I have been working cryptograms for several years and have experience with many books. This is the first one that was irritating to use. It felt like no one was editing it for accuracy and ease of use.
