Morris is always insightful, and here he's caught on to the strong parallels between the British Empire in its last few centuries and the American Empire in its rise and current moment. Obviously anyone can look at one (largely commercial) empire and another (largely commercial) one and point out that they're two of a kind, but he's picked up on something deeper and more ominous here.What the book has seized on is that the seeds of the British imperial demise were planted in or even before its heyday, when it began the at-first subtle transition from a largely commercial enterprise to a colonial project, concerned more with the prestige and other knock-on effects of directly controlling large swathes of land overseas than with the hard economic benefits that a light touch had brought it previously. "Imperial overreach" is a phrase we use too much when we're dissecting the end of empires, and through overuse it's gotten to be a pretty vague term. In the book, Morris has picked out that it's not the *breadth* of an empire's reach but the *type* that can end up draining its coffers and breaking its back.He's spotted that the United States, besides dilatory moves in the direction of landgrabbing in the Spanish American War and in the aftermath of WWII, has been making moves (particularly in the Middle East) which bear more than a passing resemblance to the British Empire was undergoing *its* fateful transformation. Morris makes a cogent argument that the turmoil of the world's most violent century was itself a direct effect of Britain's territorial imperial power and then its waning influence after the conclusion of the Great War, and he points to the alarming proposition of a similar collapse in our own imminent future.Avoiding the British Empire is going to give you the kind of piercing analysis and historical context that make Mr. Morris such an excellent speaker and writer, and that will make reading this book such an excellent choice.

Morris offers compelling arguments in this balanced and well-researched account of the British and American empires. His expert analysis of the foundations of the British and US Empires are both illuminating and captivating, as he gives a unique insight into reasons behind their successes (spoiler: the author gives little credence to theories of exceptionalism, and rather lies much of success at the feet of luck and geographic good fortune). His stark warnings and ideas behind how the US can learn from the failures of the British empire are refreshing.With wit and charm, Morris manages to take a large story and weave a narrative that is both cautionary and thrilling. Highly recommended.

This is a great essay. I have been arguing a similar point for years and wow this just fleshed out my points even better.If our politicians loved America and wanted to see our country and the world be a better place in our lifetimes and our grandchildren they would follow many of the points laid out.The empire is dead long live the empire!

A greatly enjoyable, and unconventional, romp through the last three-hundred and fifty years of British history. The writing has an a spunky, opinionated style that draws on the author's seemingly inexhaustible historical knowledge. He makes long-forgotten episodes seem fresh, and draws illuminating parallels with more contemporary developments and decisions.

Morris has really accomplished something here. The author sets out to tell the history of two empires, but in the process he makes a searing case for looking at the whole world quite differently. In telling the story of the US and British world systems he has written a new and very plausible history of the past 200 years. Is the world really an atomized one, with history driven by competing empires and superpowers? Not as much as we’ve been lead to believe. Are globalization, industrialization and commercialization merely impersonal forces that just sort of happened? I think the author has unique answers to these questions...
