Between One Culture: Essays on Science and Art by Robert Schiller

Read Online and Download Between One Culture: Essays on Science and Art by Robert Schiller. This book argues that science and the arts are not two different cultures, but rather different manifestations of the same culture. Divided into seven parts, it presents a collection of translated and revised essays, mostly at the intersection between realia and humaniora. In the first two parts, the author discusses how some myths, both ancient and modern, have become intertwined with scientific ideas. The chapters in the following four parts address poems, novels, plays, and pieces of fine art that have some scientific content, as well as scientific findings which seem to have also been discovered in art. The chapters in the final part examine a number of inspiring doubts and necessary errors in the history of science. This collection of essays, most of which were originally published in Hungarian, is intended for the general public and as such includes no mathematical, physical or chemical formulae. It offers a unique resource for all those curious about the interconnections between science, art and literature.

Between One Culture: Essays on Science and Art by Robert Schiller Review

Professor Schiller, a dedicated scientist, mentor and popular writer gave a clear answer in his book: ONE. To illustrate his perspective I take the liberty to copy the titles of the seven chapters: Mythology. Alchemy. Poems and Science. Novels. Thermodynamics. Fine Arts. The Pleasure of Doubt. The Reader will enjoy to learn among many others about the thermodynamics of happiness and love, about the relationship between Boltzmann and Picasso, or about the chemistry of sculpting. I think the take away of the book came from one of the author's heroes: "Boyle has taught science how to doubt." The book is non-technical, and it is a real joy to read!

This book is an intellectual journey guided by someone versed in the sciences, humanities, and the arts. The author skillfully shares a dedicated interest and knowledge with the readers. Greats of physics, chemistry, the philosophy of science, and other areas of human endeavor come to life. We learn about their achievements and limitations, and their short-term and long-term impacts. All this is weaved into a common tapestry and the author’s one culture emerges as an undistinguishable ensemble of what we usually refer to as the two cultures.
