Nigeria: A Failed State? Profound Treatise On A Crippled Giant by Robert Nwadiaru

Read Online and Download Nigeria: A Failed State? Profound Treatise On A Crippled Giant by Robert Nwadiaru. The state of Nigeria rests upon a knife's edge. Dwindling oil prices, global shifts away from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, and the ubiquity of corruption in the country's bureaucracy has created palpable fear. It cannot only be felt at the local, state, and national levels, but in communities, schools, and the homes of its citizens.Despite these issues, as one of the leading oil- and gas-producing countries in the world, Nigeria has a responsibility to lead the African region out of poverty and into the modern world. They have the resources and determination, but it will take overcoming decades of entrenched corruption to find a way forward.Nigeria: A Failed State? treats in exhaustive detail the history of Robert Nwadiaru's home nation and the contemporary political, social, and economic obstacles facing the country as it attempts to modernize.

Nigeria: A Failed State? Profound Treatise On A Crippled Giant by Robert Nwadiaru Review

A quote, which I have for years attributed to Richard Dowden in his book "Africa, Altered States and Ordinary Miracles," but cannot confirm now that I am looking for it, is “Any sentence which begins with ‘Africa is’ is wrong,” is one with which I agree most heartily. It’s an entire continent, for pity’s sake!Mr. Nwariaru’s book shines a light on Nigeria, the 600lb gorilla in the room of small states. No other nation in sub-Saharan, the “real,” Africa” has anywhere like the industrial potential, natural resources, or population of Nigeria. Yet, it languishes in corruption, intrigue, Muslim terrorism and poverty. It has many times the hydroelectric potential that Ghana has, just two countries over, yet from neglect has lost or never realized most of it. I have watched the Africa Cup in a mud hut, albeit a very hospitable mud hut, in Nalerigu, East Malaprusi District, in far Northeastern Ghana after caring for Fulani itinerant herders all day, while Nigerians in the capital of Lagos could not, worrying about Fulani activism in the far north, within walking distance of Nalerigu. Ghana, the old Gold Coast, had and continues to have its own problems. It has some two hundred languages, its own experiments with cults of personality, socialism, one-party rule and corruption. It is far from ideal, yet Nigeria is so much worse. Why the difference?Mr. Nwariaru’s book tries to answer this very knotty problem. His book, despite being a Kirkus Reviews Book of the Year in 2016, is not perfect. It could very much do with a table of contents and an index. The authorial opinion impedes at regular intervals. He covers much the same territory repeatedly as he gives a political history before layering narratives on energy policy, resources, terrorism, revolts and internationalism on top of it. It does become redundant at times. To some extent, I believe this necessary for a Western reader; the names are unfamiliar and numerous. The acronyms should make your eyes water. His final thesis is that the country, cobbled together by colonial powers more interested in commerce than government, has probably irremediable problems but they all have the same modus operandi: corruption. The moral laxity of both the private and public entities are sufficient to thwart any attempt at stability or reformation. Corruption is rampant, unapologetic and massive. Any addition of capital only serves to make the flames of greed flame higher, aided by the opaque banking system that allows ill-gotten gains to be squirreled away without difficulty. Mr. Nwariaru offers no easy advice but one: to kill a fire (corruption) start at the base.

Sometimes you just need to step out of your own little world and expand your horizons a bit. That's what I did with this book... chose I topic I don't know much about, and read something on it. Nigeria:A Failed State was informative, well-written, and expanded my horizons. I'm really glad I read it. The author really seemed to know what they were talking about, and addressed many, many issues related to the sociological, political, and economic history of Nigeria, and why it was important to the country as a whole. My favorite part was just learning the history of the nation.Pick this one up, you won't regret it!

Although I agree with the conceit of the book. The execution here is lacking. Unnecessary use of polysllabic words to cover the lack of real insight. The citations are sparse then dubious when available. Few solutions offered, just pages of already oft repeated complaints. The author also hints at Western methods being inherently superior to Nigeria's. Ends up being a book repeating what amateur analysts already banter about, with a more expansive vocabulary and lot less wit. Finally, it may not be the fault of the writer and editor. The kindle formatting is quite bad.

This book is filled with all sorts of facts and insights about the Nigeria as a hall and the history of the country. I am planning on a trip to the country in the coming weeks this would be really helpful.

Few to gain a real knowledge of Nigeria except lamenting...
