Barnum: An American Life (Thorndike Press Large Print Biographies & Memoirs) by Robert Wilson

Read Online and Download Barnum: An American Life (Thorndike Press Large Print Biographies & Memoirs) by Robert Wilson. The first major biography of P.T. Barnum in a generation, a vivid account of the forefather of American entertainment. P. T. Barnum was the greatest showman the world has ever seen: the cocreator of the Barnum & Bailey Circus and the man who made worldwide sensations of Jumbo the Elephant, General Tom Thumb, and the "Swedish Nightingale," Jenny Lind. He was the champion of wonder, joy, trickery, and "humbug." He was, as Barnum argues, one of the most important Americans of the nineteenth century. Nearly 125 years after his death, the name P. T. Barnum still inspires wonder. Robert Wilson's vivid new biography captures the full genius, infamy, and allure of the ebullient showman. From birth to death, Phineas Taylor Barnum repeatedly reinvented himself. He learned as a young man how to wow crowds, and built a fortune that placed him among the first millionaires in the United States. He also suffered tragedy, bankruptcy, and fires that destroyed his life's work, yet willed himself to rebuild and succeed again. As an entertainer, Barnum courted controversy time and again throughout his life--yet he was also a man of strong convictions, guided in his work not by a desire to deceive but an eagerness to thrill and bring joy to his audiences. He almost certainly never uttered the infamous line, "There's a sucker born every minute," instead taking pride in giving crowds their money's worth and more. Robert Wilson, editor of The American Scholar, tells a gripping story in Barnum, one that's imbued with the same buoyant spirit as the man himself. Wilson adeptly makes the case for P. T. Barnum's place among the icons of American history, as a figure who represented, and indeed created, a distinctly American sense of optimism, industriousness, humor, and relentless energy.

Barnum: An American Life (Thorndike Press Large Print Biographies & Memoirs) by Robert Wilson Review

A few days ago, this book received a favorable review in the Wall Street Journal, and having had a modest interest in P.T. Barnum, I ordered a copy. Robert Wilson's book is a good look at the life of America's first great entertainment mogul. Wilson covers some of the more unsavory elements, such as an early effort at using an elderly slave to pose as the nurse of George Washington but also Barnum's support for temperance, anti-slavery and reform. There are the stories of his famous New York museum, stars like Tom Thumb, Jenny Lind and Jumbo the elephant and Barnum's work in the circus. P.T. Barnum comes across as a likeable rascal whose chief concern was to entertain the public. All in all, a good biography of a remarkable man.

This book is so well written that I had trouble putting it down. Barnum was a complicated man, as most of us are, and also someone from a different era when attitudes and culture were quite different from today. I thought Wilson provided a balanced portrait. Many of the things that Barnum did, such as his treatment of animals in his museums and in the circus would not be tolerated today, but he was hardly alone at the time. Although Barnum was a con man and perpetrated some outrageous humbugs, many people enjoyed his scams and he perpetuated them so to entertain and only charged a quarter. He became rich and lived extravagantly when he could but he does not strike me as particularly cruel and exploitative. For example, you might say that he exploited Tom Thumb but he also gave him a career and helped him become wealthy and to find a wife.Writing a biography is challenging but Robert Wilson has met the challenge in Barnum: An American Life.

Barnum did some horrendous things, promoting outright frauds and exploiting people. But he also provided a great deal of legitimate entertainment, became a protector of animals, introduced Jenny Lind to the American public, and focused on "wholesome" entertainment (he was an ardent prohibitionist). As the author details, Barnum has to be understood in light of his times, and the author does an excellent job detailing the conditions in the US and England that fostered a Barnum and his types of entertainment. This is a fascinating book which also shows how someone can make a fortune, lose it, and remake it in America, and how society responds to "wonders."

Honestly, I struggled to get into this biography, finding the first half of the book a slow moving drag. However, I did begin to enjoy the story of P. T. Barnum around the middle of the book, and enjoyed the last half. I'm not sure why, perhaps it was Barnum's life, itself. I will say that the second half was much easier to read than the first. The author does go into a great detail, and the research is very well done.

I loved watching the musical "The Greatest Showman" and that got me curious about PT Barnum. After reading the book, you see how little "The Greatest Showman" really had to show about the life of PT Barnum (even the love story of his wife was not as portrayed in the book). So, it was a great read and I learned a lot about this remarkable man!
