The Tulsa Golden Hurricane will play against a Division II opponent, the UC Davis Aggies, in an early-season tune-up Thursday at 7:30 p.m. ET at Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium. The Golden Hurricane were on the positive side of .500 (6-3) last season and are hoping to kick off an even more successful year.
Tulsa is the favorite in this one, with an expected 23.5-point margin of victory. But these early season matchups can go either way as both teams get back into playing shape.
“At the Division III level, we’re seeing athletes get sponsorships and benefiting from those already,” said David Stone, an assistant track and field coach at Elmhurst University. “We are not capable of providing athletic scholarships in this division, so any extra benefits that can be provided to our student-athlete eases the burden of the cost of attendance.”
Fall was upon them in Abilene, Texas. Overcast skies and the crisp 58-degree air resembled the breath of a peppermint. The wind? Seventeen miles per hour with a 12 miles per hour tailwind. Sixty-nine yards was all that stood in the way of Ove Johansson and history.
After the U.S. Supreme Court sat back and did nothing on Wednesday, a law went into effect in Texas that bans most abortions after six weeks. Next March, Fort Worth will host some of the first and second-round games of the Men’s NCAA Tournament, and San Antonio will be a regional site for the Sweet 16 and Elite 8. The NCAA needs to boycott Texas.
But scan through the FBS record book and you'll find other records in the highest level of college football that are likely so untouchable — either due to rule changes and the evolution of the game, or due to a flash of brilliance (or the opposite of brilliance) — that we think they'll stand in the history books forever.
“Since the Supreme Court’s ruling to allow college athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness, it’s been a mad rush to the bank,” said Ivan Parron of Parron Law, which specializes in legal matters related to sports, entertainment, and media. “The promotional opportunities for college athletes in traditional and non-traditional sports are limitless. Sports merchandising was estimated at approximately $15 billion the last few years, and with the new NIL ruling, it is poised to grow by leaps and bounds.”
Not only is it remarkable that Burleson didn't reach the end zone that day, but in his previous game, he didn't catch a single pass, and in the game after he set this record, he had a pedestrian four catches for 23 yards. Good luck figuring out exactly what happened in November 2001 and why.
In the 2020 season, Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz completed his first 17 pass attempts in the Badgers' season-opener against Illinois as he finished 20-for-21 passing for 248 yards and five touchdowns. By any measure, it was a near-perfect performance and the one incompletion was a dropped pass.
The national leader in receiving yards per game during the 2020 season was Ole Miss' consensus All-American wide receiver Elijah Moore, who averaged 149.1 yards per game. That's roughly what Nevada's Alex Van Dyke averaged during his two-year career Nevada. Just look at Moore's freshman (36.2 receiving yards per game) and sophomore (70.8 yards per game) seasons to see that it took Moore time (and potentially a coaching change to offensive mind Lane Kiffin) for him to develop into a receiver who could average that many yards per game.
So, Sanders' Heisman-winning season in '88 — when he ran for 332 yards against Texas Tech, 320 yards against Kansas State, 312 yards against Kansas and 304 yards against Tulsa — hasn't been matched by any other running back in their career, let alone a single season. Even as the length of the college football season has increased to 15 games for the teams that advance to the College Football Playoff National Championship, in order for Sanders' record to be broken, it would still require a player who plays for a national finalist to rush for at least 300 yards in one out of every three games in a single season.
On July 29, ESPN reported that Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, who had yet to play a single game in his brand-new career, had signed $800,000 worth of NIL deals already and was poised to accept well over $1 million more.
The NCAA’s Division III consists of schools that don’t offer athletic scholarships. For student-athletes at those schools, the new rule changes could mean the difference between being able to afford college or not.
This Big 12 shootout, which ended in a 66-59 win for Oklahoma, featured a future NFL MVP and Super Bowl champion (Mahomes) and a future Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 pick in the NFL draft (Mayfield), the former of whom is arguably a generational talent at the position and the latter of whom was named the best player in the country one year later. It was potentially a perfect storm of a conference (Big 12) and its offensive philosophy (the air raid and spread offenses), a startling lack of defense (each team finished with 854 yards of offense) and two special quarterbacks.
In March, I suggested that the NIT and the NCAA Women’s Tournament consider boycotting Texas after Gov. Greg Abbott lifted the mask mandate. Six months later I’m trying it again as Abbott is hellbent on risking the health and safety of millions of his citizens, and the future students and recruits that could be considering going to school in the state.
Boycotting Texas is the least the NCAA could do, especially after last month’s study proved that they have been holding back women’s sports. Check this out from the executive summary of the NCAA’s External Gender Equity Review:
No one, of course, is arguing that local context should not be considered when enacting attendance protocols, or that these determinations aren’t being guided by current scientific understandings of the pandemic. However, the NCAA is duty-bound to make decisions in the best interest of its approved varsity sports, which presumably means making sometimes difficult choices to grow these opportunities for future competitors.9
It's almost unfathomable to see a stat line of 12 receptions, 326 yards, 27.2 yards per reception and...zero touchdowns. Burleson's effort against San Jose State ranks tied for eighth all-time in single-game receiving yards and yet, he never made it to the end zone. In fact, he only scored two touchdowns in 2001, despite finishing the season with 53 receptions and 737 receiving yards.
But cash-flush schools might be able to bend the new rules to offer the equivalent of scholarships dressed up as something else. Stone imagines a scenario where brand-name universities with deep ties to big corporations — like Oregon (Nike) and Arkansas (Tyson/Walmart) — use the rules essentially to deliver scholarships to student-athletes who wouldn’t have otherwise received them.
While taking on a team in Colorado Springs, Davis and Elkins College's soccer coach witnessed Johansson's play, and shortly after, offered him a soccer scholarship. He moved to West Virginia and became an All-American.
UTEP AthleticsFormer UTEP quarterback Brooks Dawson once threw a touchdown on each of his first six attempts against New Mexico.
The Gophers outhit the Longhorns .394 to .190 in the third with only two errors compared the Longhorn's five. Samedy is up to 17 kills, a usual stat line for the star, Jenna Wenaas is up to eight kills and Landfair chipped in nine.
NAU returns five athletes from their championship team this past March, including two top-10 finishers in Nico Young (fourth) and Abdihamid Nur (seventh). Nur had a sensational outdoor season for the Lumberjacks, finishing third in the final of the 10,000 meters at the 2021 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in a PR of 27:42.73. With Nur, Young and the addition of Nebraska transfer George Kusche, who won the individual title at the 2020 Big Ten Cross Country Championships, NAU will have a stout top-3 at the front of the pack once again.
UTEP has been on the wrong end of several FBS records — former Houston quarterback Case Keenum holds the record for the most career passing yards gained against one opponent (1,882 yards against UTEP) and former TCU running back LaDainian Tomlinson has the record for career rushing yards against one opponent (788 yards against UTEP) — but the Miners are also in the FBS record book for positive reasons, too.
The owner of four individual SEC titles during his career, Casas’ move would not be considered intra-conference despite the fact that the University of Texas recently accepted an invitation to join the SEC. The Longhorns won’t officially join the conference until July 2025. Texas A&M and Texas were formerly conference foes in the Big 12 before the Aggies departed in 2012.
For teams not in the running for someone like Lively, Bona is now a top priority and now we know which programs are officially in the running.
Here are the rest of the top-10 teams in the preseason: No. 6 Queens (N.C.), No. 7 Missouri Southern, No. 8 Alabama-Huntsville, No. 9 Augustana (S.D.) and No. 10 Lee (Tenn.). The Chargers will start the season with a program best placement in the National Coaches’ Poll as they come back with six athletes from their 19th place team in 2019.
The No. 1 Texas Longhorns withstood the challenge and took down Minnesota 3-1 (26-24, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22) on the Gophers' home court on Wednesday night. The Longhorns won the fourth set in another close battle.
We're going to double dip with Barry Sanders but this time it's a family affair. (And the truth is that we could triple dip, quadruple dip, etc., with Sanders because he was that good and set that many records.) Not only did Sanders win the Heisman in the 1988 season with his all-time great junior campaign — 2,628 rushing yards, 7.6 yards per carry, 37 rushing touchdowns, one punt return touchdown and one kick return touchdown — but his brother, Byron, also turned in a 1,000-yard season with Northwestern the fall of '88.
What started out as a messy match turned into a high-caliber volleyball battle that we have all been looking forward to. The Gophers rose to the challenge and improved as the match went on against the experienced Longhorns roster. The Gophers have some new components to their team, and head coach Hugh McCutcheon must be happy with the way his team battled against the No. 1 team in the nation. If anything, this proved the Gophers will be a force to be reckoned with this season. They loaded their non-conference schedule for this very reason: rising to the occasion, learning from mistakes, getting tested against good teams.
FiveThirtyEight looked at the 26 Division I-only sports — split equally at 13 apiece for men and women — and narrowed them down to the championships held separately for men and women, eliminating women’s rowing because of the lack of attendance data.2 We then compared championship attendance during the pandemic-limited 2020-21 season with the regularly scheduled 2018-19 season. Women’s championship finals averaged a capacity of 6,525 spectators in 2020-21, while men’s finals averaged a capacity of 15,071.
The Ducks didn’t compete as a team at #NCAAXC this past spring and instead, focused on track & field, where they won the indoor title and finished second outdoors. A potentially loaded roster should make Oregon a title contender in both a tough West Region and at the national level. Not only could the Ducks return the likes of Cole Hocker, Charlie Hunter, Jackson Mestler and Cooper Teare, among others, but they also added Cincinnati transfer Aaron Bienenfeld, who finished 16th this past spring and dropped his PR over 10,000 meters to 28:10.95.
The Longhorns picked up right where they left off in set 2 and utilized a tactic that they were known for last season: extremely tough serving. They proved to have a new serving weapon this year though, aside from just Eggleston. Melanie Parra has a wicked serve. She went on a 4-0 serving run to start the set before Samedy ended the run.
It's also worth noting that numerous Nevada players from the 1990s and early 2000s hold FBS passing and receiving records, so Van Dyke's record might be a case of the right player in the right system in the right era, which is why it may never be topped.
“This extreme Texas law blatantly violates the constitutional right established under Roe v. Wade and upheld as precedent for nearly half a century,” President Joe Biden said in a statement.
“The results have been cumulative, not only fostering skepticism and distrust about the sincerity of the NCAA’s commitment to gender equity, but also limiting the growth of women’s basketball and perpetuating a mistaken narrative that women’s basketball is destined to be a ‘money loser’ year after year.
Wilbert scored his long-anticipated touchdown. That didn't pressurize Johansson, but something peculiar peaked his adrenaline. Ten minutes before he and the Wildcats' special teams unit gathered at their own 41-yard line, Tony Franklin of Texas A&M kicked a 65-yard field goal (and a 64-yarder later in the game) against Baylor to take full ownership of the longest field goal in college football history.
The Grizzlies, who finished second at the 2019 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, will be faced with a rebuilding year as they return just two of those athletes from their runner-up squad. Carson Bix finished 10th in 2019 and also finished runner-up in the 5000 at the 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Bix will be joined by Isaiah Rodarte, who finished 54th in 2019, and All-American steeplechaser Ahmed Sado, who finished seventh this past May. Adams State will mix in several newcomers that can make an immediate impact.
Mark your calendar for Saturday, November 20, as that will be the date of the 2021 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, held at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida. This will be the first time in history that the meet will be contested in Florida.
They say a broken clock is right twice a day, and according to my watch, it appears that the time is now for the improbable to happen again. Boycott Texas.
In baseball and softball, both the College World Series and Women’s College World Series allowed full capacity — and both events set attendance records. (Of course, the venue for the CWS holds almost twice as many fans as the WCWS venue to begin with.) Even with one of its teams forced to forfeit because of a COVID-19 outbreak, the CWS still welcomed fans to the stands, setting all-time records for total attendance (361,711), finals attendance (72,226) and championship-deciding-game attendance (24,052).
For a quarterback to break East Carolina's Dominique Davis' record of 36 consecutive passes completed, he would have to double Mertz's streak of 17 completions in a row, then complete three additional passes for good measure. Davis' record stretched across back-to-back games against Memphis and Navy (he completed his first 26 attempts against the Midshipmen), and given the number of passes Davis completed in a row, it would likely force a potential record-breaker to complete 37 or more passes against two different opponents, which means two different schemes and opposing rosters to diagnose and dominate.
Bona is a 6’10 and 230-pound big man that is arguably the best frontcourt defender in the entire class. Although still a bit raw on the offensive end, the center is an elite shot-blocker and interior defender, while also being one of the best rebounders on both ends. The measurables and intangibles makes him an almost guarantee high-impact player, even if his post skills never become top-tier.
At the conclusion of the season, he was picked in the 12th round of the 1977 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers, becoming the oldest player drafted in NFL history at 28 years, 281 days old and the first Swedish-born player in the NFL.
Student-athletes still don’t collect paychecks for their performance on the field the way the pros do, but they can now sell themselves as a brand, just like their counterparts in the big leagues.
Overall, the Longhorns are displaying a lot more depth and balance offensively, and now that they have found their rhythm a bit, they are leading the way.
The move would give the Longhorns, who have won five of the last six men’s NCAA team titles, arguably the most dominant swimmer in college swimming.
Gymnastics was also the only sport competed at the same level for women and men8 in which attendance at the men’s championship was limited to just friends and family but public tickets were sold for the women’s championship.
"One of the refs got kind of upset because he had to walk all the way down there (to retrieve the ball)," Johansson laughed through his Swedish-Texan accent.
Shannon Devitt, a 2021 graduate of the TCNJ women's basketball team, has been selected as the NJAC's Nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year.
All that being said, I can’t watch NCAA volleyball nor keep up with it online, which is problematic for VolleyballMag.com, since almost all of our content flows through me. I’m doing my best, but there’s no way to produce the NCAA start-of-season content you expect.
His 2020-21 collegiate season also included winning a pair of individual SEC titles in the men’s 200 back and 200 IM, adding a third-place finish in the 100 fly.
The Cardinal, which finished just off the podium this past spring in fifth, return six of the seven athletes who comprised that squad, including two All-Americans in Charles Hicks (14th) and Cole Sprout (15th). Hicks and Sprout, as well as Ky Robinson (46th), were part of several über-talented freshman classes for Stanford in the past few years, which bolstered the program. The Cardinal added several more dynamic freshmen in 2021-22 and feature several hungry upperclassmen, like DJ Principe.
A week and a half before Oregon’s Sedona Prince exposed a weight room fit for a retirement community at the NCAA women’s college basketball tournament, the NCAA had made a public relations show of its support for female athletes on International Women’s Day. Within months, the NCAA was on the phone with lawyers and playing Whac-A-Mole with its blunders. Corrections matter little when they don’t result in lasting change; will the 2021-22 season look meaningfully different?
Along with facilities and provisions afforded to its athletes, another way to examine NCAA support of gender equity is to consider how the organization showcased its athletes in front of fans at championship events. Though different sports played by both men and women naturally attract different levels of fan interest, restrictions in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic could have been expected to be reasonably similar. But here, too, the NCAA came under fire.
The Mountaineers, who finished seventh at the 2019 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, only return two athletes from its NCAA qualifying team. Ryan Outler, one of the returnees from that 2019 squad, qualified for the 1500 at the 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Other Mountaineers expected to make an impact are Cade Michael and Michael Grabowski, along with San Francisco University transfer Jacob Hernandez and several other redshirts.
