Of course, some records are literally unbreakable. It's impossible for someone to break Nevada punter Pat Brady's 99-yard punt without having a touchback, and similarly, no player will ever top the record of a 100-yard return of an extra-point attempt, which is held by eight different players. But we're putting these types of records off to the side, because they're unbreakable based on the size of the playing field and the rules of the game.
“Opportunities are plentiful, as college athletes can now license and profit from their name, image, and likeness as well as launch their own merchandising companies,” Parron said. “Conservative estimates are that some All-American college athletes are earning as much as $500,000 to $1 million through social media marketing alone, including personalized video greetings, sponsored posts, and signing on as brand ambassadors for corporations.”
The Longhorns picked up right where they left off in set 2 and utilized a tactic that they were known for last season: extremely tough serving. They proved to have a new serving weapon this year though, aside from just Eggleston. Melanie Parra has a wicked serve. She went on a 4-0 serving run to start the set before Samedy ended the run.
The end of the fourth set certainly had us all on the edge of our seats. The set was tied at 18, then tied at 20, before the Longhorns notched three in a row with an Eggleston block and Philips kill and to take a 23-20 lead. Philips has been an unbelievable weapon for the Longhorns tonight, posting a career high 13 kills on .458 hitting.
Nine ties and a couple of lead changes in the fourth set ... we've got a battle on our hands. Both Minnesota and Texas have cleaned it up in the fourth set and this is looking like some high-level volleyball right now. Texas is hitting over .300 and Minnesota is hitting .200 this set. The Longhorns and the Gophers both have three players in double-digit kills for the match.
Many say the point at which his foot met the football sounded like a shotgun. Those same people believed the huddle at Abilene's 41-yard line was a fake. Johansson could hear laughter as he took formation. "But my wife April said, '10-15 seconds before you kicked, you could hear a needle fall in the stadium."
The Mountaineers, who finished seventh at the 2019 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, only return two athletes from its NCAA qualifying team. Ryan Outler, one of the returnees from that 2019 squad, qualified for the 1500 at the 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Other Mountaineers expected to make an impact are Cade Michael and Michael Grabowski, along with San Francisco University transfer Jacob Hernandez and several other redshirts.
What would affect Bona is whether or not Boakye stays around for another year. He’s not viewed as a “one and done” NBA Draft prospect so he and Bona would have to find a way to share the court together. Otherwise, Boakye may depart rather than come off the bench.
We're going to double dip with Barry Sanders but this time it's a family affair. (And the truth is that we could triple dip, quadruple dip, etc., with Sanders because he was that good and set that many records.) Not only did Sanders win the Heisman in the 1988 season with his all-time great junior campaign — 2,628 rushing yards, 7.6 yards per carry, 37 rushing touchdowns, one punt return touchdown and one kick return touchdown — but his brother, Byron, also turned in a 1,000-yard season with Northwestern the fall of '88.
The Cardinal, which finished just off the podium this past spring in fifth, return six of the seven athletes who comprised that squad, including two All-Americans in Charles Hicks (14th) and Cole Sprout (15th). Hicks and Sprout, as well as Ky Robinson (46th), were part of several über-talented freshman classes for Stanford in the past few years, which bolstered the program. The Cardinal added several more dynamic freshmen in 2021-22 and feature several hungry upperclassmen, like DJ Principe.
In the 2020 season, Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz completed his first 17 pass attempts in the Badgers' season-opener against Illinois as he finished 20-for-21 passing for 248 yards and five touchdowns. By any measure, it was a near-perfect performance and the one incompletion was a dropped pass.
I live in Baton Rouge, which, compared to other parts of Louisiana, fared relatively well during and after Hurricane Ida. But I have no electricity, which means also no cable and no internet. Luckily we have a generator, an AC window unit, and are surviving OK. It is hot and humid, but it’s Louisiana in September.
Even larger attendance splits were seen in basketball at the Division II level. While 1,080 fans descended on the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana, for the men’s basketball final, public ticket sales weren’t allowed for the women’s DII championship game, which was held in a much smaller venue at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio. Only 72 spectators were able to attend.4
Boycotting Texas is the least the NCAA could do, especially after last month’s study proved that they have been holding back women’s sports. Check this out from the executive summary of the NCAA’s External Gender Equity Review:
Stephanie Samedy notched 21 kills on .236 hitting. She improved as the match went on. The duo of sophomore standouts Taylor Landfair and Jenna Wenaas posted 11 kills apiece.
SACRAMENTO — Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday night he signed a bill that accelerates the timing of California's collegiate athlete pay law, making it effective Wednesday instead of in 2023.
The Swede continues on the football field helping mentor local high school kickers. He's still married to April, the woman he fell in love at the soccer game, the same woman he sacrificed his soccer dream for. It has led him onto a path of many successes personally and professionally.
The Irish, who finished a game runner-up this past spring, return each of their top-6 runners from that squad, who all happened to be All-Americans – Danny Kilrea (10th), Dylan Jacobs (20th), Andrew Alexander (21st), Jake Renfree (22nd), Yared Nuguse (23rd) and Joshua Methner (36th). Very few teams were able to match that kind of pack running at the NCAA meet on a tough course in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Notre Dame also added Penn transfer Anthony Russo, who has a sub-29:00 PR over 10,000 meters, among others.
“There’s an opportunity that the pandemic exposed,” Jackson said. “We’re not thinking about equity, and it makes us vulnerable to disparities. We’ve got to learn from this experience, because there’s an opportunity and a lesson here to do better.”
When Casas would become eligible to compete is unclear. The Longhorns and Aggies are scheduled to have a dual meet on October 15.
Bona is a 6’10 and 230-pound big man that is arguably the best frontcourt defender in the entire class. Although still a bit raw on the offensive end, the center is an elite shot-blocker and interior defender, while also being one of the best rebounders on both ends. The measurables and intangibles makes him an almost guarantee high-impact player, even if his post skills never become top-tier.
Johansson had only kicked four collegiate field goals before that game. Growing up in Sweden, the majority of his life was spent on a soccer pitch. Ironically, his dream of playing soccer moved him to Irving, Texas, in 1972 and to Dallas where he played for a European team.
His 2020-21 collegiate season also included winning a pair of individual SEC titles in the men’s 200 back and 200 IM, adding a third-place finish in the 100 fly.
The Cougars, who finished seventh this past spring, welcome back all seven of their athletes from that squad, including individual champion Conner Mantz and 13th-place finisher Casey Clinger. Mantz continued to shine outdoors, earning runner-up honors in the final of the 10,000 meters at the 2021 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 27:42.46 (That just missed his PR of 27:41.16 that he ran in mid-May). As usual, BYU added a strong freshman class and mixes in several athletes who returned from missions in the past year.
Newsom on Tuesday signed Senate Bill 26, which moved up the implementation date of California's athlete pay law from Jan. 1, 2023, to Sept. 1. State legislators wanted SB 26 to take effect immediately so the state's colleges and universities wouldn't be confused by the NCAA's interim suspension of its rules against name, image and likeness compensation.
The Longhorns took the second set 25-21 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The No. 1 team is now one set away from a sweep. The Gophers are really pushing the Longhorns, and this is an extremely competitive matchup, but Minnesota has been really struggling to seal the deal.
Homecoming weekend brought the crowd on Oct. 16, 1976 to Abilene Christian University and Shotwell Stadium. The stands were brimming with students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni. They knew one record would be broken that day. Wilbert Montgomery was a touchdown shy of surpassing fellow Mississippi native Walter Payton's career collegiate touchdown record (63). What they didn't know of was the dialogue that preceded the game between ACU teammates Johansson and Montgomery. Both agreed to set records that day.
ESPN and ESPN2 were both used for the CWS and WCWS, but all three of the softball final series games were on ESPN, while two of the three games in the baseball final series were on ESPN2. The baseball games were all in prime time; though viewership of the Women’s College World Series spiked by 37 percent relative to 2019, the deciding final game of the tournament was held on a Thursday afternoon.
On June 21, the Supreme Court handed down a decision in Alston v. NCAA, an antitrust lawsuit that would forever change the nature of both higher education and sports marketing in America. The decision effectively ended the NCAA’s longstanding ban on players profiting from their names, images and likenesses (NIL).
The Sun Devils didn’t have much of a frontcourt last season but did land top-30 center prospect Enoch Boakye, likely to start in a few months. They also have three-star commit Duke Brennan for the 2022 class to add depth but that won’t affect Bona.
The Gophers outhit the Longhorns .394 to .190 in the third with only two errors compared the Longhorn's five. Samedy is up to 17 kills, a usual stat line for the star, Jenna Wenaas is up to eight kills and Landfair chipped in nine.
The fourth set was point-for-point when Parra headed back to the service line .. she has gone on some big-time serving runs for the Longhorns all match long. But Samedy picked up a big side out and kept the match tight. A big-time block from Jenna Wenaas for the Gophers tied it up at 13.
In baseball and softball, both the College World Series and Women’s College World Series allowed full capacity — and both events set attendance records. (Of course, the venue for the CWS holds almost twice as many fans as the WCWS venue to begin with.) Even with one of its teams forced to forfeit because of a COVID-19 outbreak, the CWS still welcomed fans to the stands, setting all-time records for total attendance (361,711), finals attendance (72,226) and championship-deciding-game attendance (24,052).
"It was exciting to get on that field knowing if I make this field goal then I will do something that no one has ever done in the sport," Johansson said.
The NCAA’s Division III consists of schools that don’t offer athletic scholarships. For student-athletes at those schools, the new rule changes could mean the difference between being able to afford college or not.
It’s no secret that college sports are drenched in corporate cash — Capital One Orange Bowl or Goodyear Cotton Bowl, anyone? But with the exception of scholarships, none of that money ever filtered down to the student-athletes themselves. June 21 changed all that. Now, student-athletes in all three divisions can get paid for the use of their NIL — and the impact of the court’s ruling was as enormous as it was immediate.
It looked like it was going to be all Minnesota in set 1, but the No. 1 team in the country showed exactly that as they stormed back to take set 1 after trailing almost the entire time. Texas hit .105 on the set and still managed to win it.
Casas has been a star throughout his three-year career in College Station but really elevated his game to a new level as a junior, sweeping his individual events at the NCAA Championships with victories in the men’s 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley. That made Casas one of just two swimmers to go three-for-three individually at the meet, with the other being Cal’s Ryan Hoffer, who graduated after last season.
The NCAA eventually walked back its protocol for the beach volleyball tournament, allowing around 700 spectators each day to accommodate players’ family and friends — still far short of the 9,449 in attendance for the 2019 title match at the same site. As the academic year came to an end, more NCAA championship events did return to 100 percent capacity. But even then, there were still significant disparities between men’s and women’s events.
Ron Hadfield, Abilene's former editor of the student newspaper The Optimist and current editor of the school's alumni magazine, remembers covering the game from the sidelines that day. He recalls people asking coach Wally Bullington why he tried to kick a field goal from that spot on the field.
Minnesota responded immediately though with a Samedy kill and big time block on Eggleston to get right back into it. But a Minnesota service error and another rocket from Eggleston sealed the deal for the No. 1 Longhorns.
“Colleges and universities are scrambling to figure out how to comply and enforce the new NIL rules, and there are some legal questions to consider as well,” Parron said. “For instance, will universities allow athletes to profit from a team’s logo? In some cases, universities are discussing a 50/50 merchandising split.”
In March, I suggested that the NIT and the NCAA Women’s Tournament consider boycotting Texas after Gov. Greg Abbott lifted the mask mandate. Six months later I’m trying it again as Abbott is hellbent on risking the health and safety of millions of his citizens, and the future students and recruits that could be considering going to school in the state.
Attendance of the Division I men’s basketball national final between Gonzaga and Baylor at Lucas Oil Stadium was limited to 25 percent capacity, or 7,923 fans, according to the NCAA. But the DI women’s championship game between Stanford and Arizona in the Alamodome was held to 17 percent capacity, or 3,165 spectators — 60 percent fewer fans than the men’s final.3 And that restriction to the women’s final came in Texas, a state infamous for its lack of COVID-19 restrictions.
FiveThirtyEight looked at the 26 Division I-only sports — split equally at 13 apiece for men and women — and narrowed them down to the championships held separately for men and women, eliminating women’s rowing because of the lack of attendance data.2 We then compared championship attendance during the pandemic-limited 2020-21 season with the regularly scheduled 2018-19 season. Women’s championship finals averaged a capacity of 6,525 spectators in 2020-21, while men’s finals averaged a capacity of 15,071.
Along with facilities and provisions afforded to its athletes, another way to examine NCAA support of gender equity is to consider how the organization showcased its athletes in front of fans at championship events. Though different sports played by both men and women naturally attract different levels of fan interest, restrictions in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic could have been expected to be reasonably similar. But here, too, the NCAA came under fire.
UTEP has been on the wrong end of several FBS records — former Houston quarterback Case Keenum holds the record for the most career passing yards gained against one opponent (1,882 yards against UTEP) and former TCU running back LaDainian Tomlinson has the record for career rushing yards against one opponent (788 yards against UTEP) — but the Miners are also in the FBS record book for positive reasons, too.

Samedy is up to 13 kills on .273 hitting. Every time she does something like this ⬇️, we get reminded as to why she won Big Ten Player of the year last season.
CC McGraw has been a big reason for the Gophers success this match but especially in the third set. She has been keeping them alive play after play. She notched seven of her 18 digs in the third set. Melani Shaffmaster, the Gopher's sophomore setter, is up to 29 assists and one kill, but a good one. Check it out ⬇️
Grand Valley State is also carrying momentum from the outdoor season after winning the team’s first title at 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championship. A big part of their success was from their distance runners, led by Harding’s 5000 crown and runner-up finish in the 10,000 as part of a strong double.
Colorado School of Mines will return five athletes from its championship team two years ago, which include four All-Americans that recorded top-20 finishes – Kyle Moran (4th), Dylan Ko (7th), Luc Hagen (15th) and Jake Mitchem (20th). Luke Julian, Dillon Powell and Loic Scomparin are also expected to bolster this Oredigger lineup and keep them in contention to successfully defend their crown. The distance athletes shined on the track for the Orediggers during the 2021 season, as six of those men combined for a total of 10 First Team All-America honors between indoors and outdoors.
UTEP AthleticsFormer UTEP quarterback Brooks Dawson once threw a touchdown on each of his first six attempts against New Mexico.
So, Sanders' Heisman-winning season in '88 — when he ran for 332 yards against Texas Tech, 320 yards against Kansas State, 312 yards against Kansas and 304 yards against Tulsa — hasn't been matched by any other running back in their career, let alone a single season. Even as the length of the college football season has increased to 15 games for the teams that advance to the College Football Playoff National Championship, in order for Sanders' record to be broken, it would still require a player who plays for a national finalist to rush for at least 300 yards in one out of every three games in a single season.
Some people like to view the kick as a fluke, that mystical powers were at work that day, that the wind gave the ball extra life — anything to sell Johansson's achievement short.
Brionne Butler came up big at the net for the Longhorns and Skylar Fields got fired up late in the set as the Longhorns found their rhythm. It was certainly strange seeing the Longhorns struggling, but it didn't last long enough for them to go down 1-0.

NAU returns five athletes from their championship team this past March, including two top-10 finishers in Nico Young (fourth) and Abdihamid Nur (seventh). Nur had a sensational outdoor season for the Lumberjacks, finishing third in the final of the 10,000 meters at the 2021 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in a PR of 27:42.73. With Nur, Young and the addition of Nebraska transfer George Kusche, who won the individual title at the 2020 Big Ten Cross Country Championships, NAU will have a stout top-3 at the front of the pack once again.
"One of the refs got kind of upset because he had to walk all the way down there (to retrieve the ball)," Johansson laughed through his Swedish-Texan accent.
Today, Saturdays are for soccer. At 6 a.m. Johansson channels his childhood self and turns on the television. Viewing the 110-yard field with soccer goal posts on opposite ends through the LED lit box, he remembers the 1958 FIFA World Cup. He was supposed to attend the every-four-year event in his hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden that year. Vicariously, he lives through the Premier League now, and any other televised soccer events.
Texas led almost the whole way in set 2, relying heavily on their star player, Logan Eggleston. This time around they outhit the Gophers .225 to .087. Eggleston leads with eight kills and Phillips has seven kills on .462 hitting efficiency. Four Texas players have over six kills.
UTEP quarterback Brooks Dawson once threw a touchdown pass on six consecutive attempts against New Mexico and what makes it really unbreakable is that he started the game 6-for-6 with six touchdowns. That will never be topped. The notion of putting up "video-game numbers" can be overstated at times, but a stat line like that to start a game is something you're far more likely to find in an arcade or a friend's basement than on the gridiron in an actual FBS game.
After the conclusion of the 2020-2021 collegiate season, Casas was arrested for public intoxication in early May, just six weeks out of the U.S. Olympic Trials. Casas ended up finishing third in the men’s 100 backstroke at Trials in a time of 52.76, four one-hundredths shy of his best time and less than three-tenths outside of an Olympic berth. The McAllen, Texas native also placed sixth in the 200 back. He entered the meet as the 2nd seed in the 100 back and 3rd seed in the 200 back.
Here is the preseason edition of the 2021 NCAA Division II Men’s Cross Country National Coaches’ Poll that was released Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
All that being said, I can’t watch NCAA volleyball nor keep up with it online, which is problematic for VolleyballMag.com, since almost all of our content flows through me. I’m doing my best, but there’s no way to produce the NCAA start-of-season content you expect.
“When you’re looking at a sport that has a limit of 12-16 scholarships, a company that can supplement that by providing funds to cover the cost of attendance will provide an advantage that smaller or less-connected schools cannot match,” Stone said. “I expect we’ll see a larger shift toward the bigger schools increasing the gap on smaller schools.”
It's also worth noting that numerous Nevada players from the 1990s and early 2000s hold FBS passing and receiving records, so Van Dyke's record might be a case of the right player in the right system in the right era, which is why it may never be topped.
Rooted in Title IX and directed by the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics, the NCAA Woman of the Year program celebrates the accomplishments of female college athletes across all three NCAA Divisions.
In hindsight, there was nothing pitiful about it. "I said, 'This little baby's going to fly,' and I kicked off and it went through the uprights and over the chain length fence of the athletic dorm."
The childhood game he adored and moved across an ocean for could not compare, however, to the girl in Texas. April was enrolled at Abilene Christian and Johansson sacrificed his athletic scholarship to follow suit. The Wildcats did not have a men's soccer team, so in order to stay in Abilene, he had to try out for the football team. Two kickers already held a spot on the team, and Bullington gave Johansson a pity tryout.
Defending champion Northern Arizona is a near-unanimous No. 1 in the first edition of the National Coaches’ Poll, earning 10 of 11 first-place votes. The Lumberjacks lead second-ranked Notre Dame (1 FPV), third-ranked BYU, fourth ranked Oregon and fifth-ranked Stanford in a Mountain and West Region-dominant national top-5.
Each stop led to another significant point in his life. A girl in the stands caught his eye during a game, and he spent halftime using the 24 words of English he knew to acquire her phone number. He succeeded, and the pair dated for five to six months until he got a call.
Gymnastics was also the only sport competed at the same level for women and men8 in which attendance at the men’s championship was limited to just friends and family but public tickets were sold for the women’s championship.
This marks the third NJAC NCAA Woman of the Year nominee in a row from TCNJ. Natalie Cooper was the honoree in 2019, while Elizabeth Morrison earned the recognition in 2018.
There are a handful of FBS records and milestones that could be broken and reached this season, respectively. (Looking at you, Liberty quarterback Malik Willis, Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder, and Ohio State wide receivers Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson.)
The Gophers stayed right there with them this set though as Samedy turned it on. They tied it up at 11, but never took the lead. Texas has kept the lead the whole set. Brionne Butler is up to six kills on .300 hitting, Molly Philips has five, and Eggleston has six kills.
"California led the charge against the unjust power imbalance in college sports, launching a national movement and spurring long-overdue changes in this multibillion-dollar enterprise," Newsom said in a statement. "I'm proud to build on our leadership with today's legislation to expand and protect our college athletes' rights to reap the rewards from their sacrifices and success."
Wilbert scored his long-anticipated touchdown. That didn't pressurize Johansson, but something peculiar peaked his adrenaline. Ten minutes before he and the Wildcats' special teams unit gathered at their own 41-yard line, Tony Franklin of Texas A&M kicked a 65-yard field goal (and a 64-yarder later in the game) against Baylor to take full ownership of the longest field goal in college football history.
For the Longhorns, Eggleston led with 17 kills. Skylar Fields came up big down the stretch with 14 kills after twisting her ankle earlier, Phillips had a career-high match, and Brionne Butler added nine kills and was a crucial aspect of their high-performing offense towards the end of the match.
With a new college athletic season underway, no one must be happier to turn the page on the 2020-21 calendar than the NCAA itself. Last season, as colleges struggled to play through the pandemic, a series of debates around gender equity spilled out into the open. First there were the woefully inadequate provisions at the women’s college basketball tournament, which drew the ire of figures ranging from NBA star Stephen Curry to 37 members of Congress. Then there were the nonexistent locker rooms and play-by-play announcers in the early rounds of the Division I women’s volleyball tournament, and the practices staged on makeshift “courts” that were criticized for their composition. And at the Women’s College World Series, competitors once again played double-headers in a stadium without on-site showers.
