Even larger attendance splits were seen in basketball at the Division II level. While 1,080 fans descended on the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana, for the men’s basketball final, public ticket sales weren’t allowed for the women’s DII championship game, which was held in a much smaller venue at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio. Only 72 spectators were able to attend.4
This marks the third NJAC NCAA Woman of the Year nominee in a row from TCNJ. Natalie Cooper was the honoree in 2019, while Elizabeth Morrison earned the recognition in 2018.
The Longhorns took the second set 25-21 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The No. 1 team is now one set away from a sweep. The Gophers are really pushing the Longhorns, and this is an extremely competitive matchup, but Minnesota has been really struggling to seal the deal.
The Cardinal, which finished just off the podium this past spring in fifth, return six of the seven athletes who comprised that squad, including two All-Americans in Charles Hicks (14th) and Cole Sprout (15th). Hicks and Sprout, as well as Ky Robinson (46th), were part of several über-talented freshman classes for Stanford in the past few years, which bolstered the program. The Cardinal added several more dynamic freshmen in 2021-22 and feature several hungry upperclassmen, like DJ Principe.
Mark your calendar for Saturday, November 20, as that will be the date of the 2021 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, held at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida. This will be the first time in history that the meet will be contested in Florida.
Devitt is a well-deserving recipient of the conference's NCAA Woman of the Year nominee. The 2021 graduate completed her career with WBCA All-America honors. She also shined in the classroom as well, earning CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition. Devitt averaged 19 points and 10.4 rebounds per game this past season, and she became TCNJ's all-time leading rebounder by passing Candy Kaschak's prior record of 962 boards. Devitt finished her career with 971 rebounds.
"It was exciting to get on that field knowing if I make this field goal then I will do something that no one has ever done in the sport," Johansson said.
The Lakers, who finished fourth at the 2019 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships, return five of their seven athletes from two years ago, including three All-Americans in Tanner Chada (24th), Noah Steffen (27th) and Ben Zaremba (34th). The Lakers will also welcome back Enael Woldemichael, a sixth place finisher at the 2018 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. Although he is no stranger on the track, Isaac Harding will have his cross country debut for the Lakers. Harding finished 44th individually at the 2019 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships while at Michigan.
The rising senior is also tied for sixth-fastest in history in the 50 back (20.61), which, although it’s not traditionally raced individually in collegiate competition, is another valuable asset potentially for the Longhorns on the 200 medley relay.
Shannon Devitt, a 2021 graduate of the TCNJ women's basketball team, has been selected as the NJAC's Nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year.
The No. 1 Texas Longhorns withstood the challenge and took down Minnesota 3-1 (26-24, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22) on the Gophers' home court on Wednesday night. The Longhorns won the fourth set in another close battle.
Colorado School of Mines will return five athletes from its championship team two years ago, which include four All-Americans that recorded top-20 finishes – Kyle Moran (4th), Dylan Ko (7th), Luc Hagen (15th) and Jake Mitchem (20th). Luke Julian, Dillon Powell and Loic Scomparin are also expected to bolster this Oredigger lineup and keep them in contention to successfully defend their crown. The distance athletes shined on the track for the Orediggers during the 2021 season, as six of those men combined for a total of 10 First Team All-America honors between indoors and outdoors.
Of course, some records are literally unbreakable. It's impossible for someone to break Nevada punter Pat Brady's 99-yard punt without having a touchback, and similarly, no player will ever top the record of a 100-yard return of an extra-point attempt, which is held by eight different players. But we're putting these types of records off to the side, because they're unbreakable based on the size of the playing field and the rules of the game.
SACRAMENTO — Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday night he signed a bill that accelerates the timing of California's collegiate athlete pay law, making it effective Wednesday instead of in 2023.
Shaine Casas, who won three titles at the 2021 Men’s NCAA Championships with the Texas A&M Aggies, informed teammates that he would be entering the transfer portal on Monday. A source later indicated that Casas is planning to join the University of Texas team with an eye toward both the remainder of his collegiate career and subsequent pro career.
On June 21, the Supreme Court handed down a decision in Alston v. NCAA, an antitrust lawsuit that would forever change the nature of both higher education and sports marketing in America. The decision effectively ended the NCAA’s longstanding ban on players profiting from their names, images and likenesses (NIL).
The 2021 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships are set for Saturday, November 20 at Abbey Golf Course in Tampa, Florida. A lot could happen between now and November, but if this is any indication of what could transpire, we have an exciting battle brewing for the national title.
Stephanie Samedy notched 21 kills on .236 hitting. She improved as the match went on. The duo of sophomore standouts Taylor Landfair and Jenna Wenaas posted 11 kills apiece.
Samedy is up to 13 kills on .273 hitting. Every time she does something like this ⬇️, we get reminded as to why she won Big Ten Player of the year last season.
For the Longhorns, Eggleston led with 17 kills. Skylar Fields came up big down the stretch with 14 kills after twisting her ankle earlier, Phillips had a career-high match, and Brionne Butler added nine kills and was a crucial aspect of their high-performing offense towards the end of the match.
Rooted in Title IX and directed by the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics, the NCAA Woman of the Year program celebrates the accomplishments of female college athletes across all three NCAA Divisions.
Some of the attendance and viewership disparities are of course due to imbalanced marketing, which Jackson said must be recalibrated.
Some people like to view the kick as a fluke, that mystical powers were at work that day, that the wind gave the ball extra life — anything to sell Johansson's achievement short.
"One of the refs got kind of upset because he had to walk all the way down there (to retrieve the ball)," Johansson laughed through his Swedish-Texan accent.
Student-athletes still don’t collect paychecks for their performance on the field the way the pros do, but they can now sell themselves as a brand, just like their counterparts in the big leagues.
Here is the preseason edition of the 2021 NCAA Division II Men’s Cross Country National Coaches’ Poll that was released Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
So, Sanders' Heisman-winning season in '88 — when he ran for 332 yards against Texas Tech, 320 yards against Kansas State, 312 yards against Kansas and 304 yards against Tulsa — hasn't been matched by any other running back in their career, let alone a single season. Even as the length of the college football season has increased to 15 games for the teams that advance to the College Football Playoff National Championship, in order for Sanders' record to be broken, it would still require a player who plays for a national finalist to rush for at least 300 yards in one out of every three games in a single season.
On July 29, ESPN reported that Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, who had yet to play a single game in his brand-new career, had signed $800,000 worth of NIL deals already and was poised to accept well over $1 million more.
SB 26, authored by state Sens. Skinner and Steven Bradford (D-Gardena), received unanimous votes in both houses of the California Legislature in August. The measure would also apply the Fair Pay to Play Act to the state's community colleges, in addition to expanding athlete compensation to include earnings from their athletic reputation.
We're going to double dip with Barry Sanders but this time it's a family affair. (And the truth is that we could triple dip, quadruple dip, etc., with Sanders because he was that good and set that many records.) Not only did Sanders win the Heisman in the 1988 season with his all-time great junior campaign — 2,628 rushing yards, 7.6 yards per carry, 37 rushing touchdowns, one punt return touchdown and one kick return touchdown — but his brother, Byron, also turned in a 1,000-yard season with Northwestern the fall of '88.
Ed is in Chicago this week for AVP and we’ll have full coverage of the last domestic pro beach event of the season. Thanks to the hard-working Lauren Olds, our TV and Streaming Listings are up to date. And I’m doing my best to keep up with NCAA volleyball and will catch up in due time. For that matter, this weekend I’ll have a story on Tulane, which left New Orleans — hit so hard by Ida — and won’t return. The Green Wave will anchor in Birmingham, Alabama, after playing at Florida State.
For teams not in the running for someone like Lively, Bona is now a top priority and now we know which programs are officially in the running.
“Colleges and universities are scrambling to figure out how to comply and enforce the new NIL rules, and there are some legal questions to consider as well,” Parron said. “For instance, will universities allow athletes to profit from a team’s logo? In some cases, universities are discussing a 50/50 merchandising split.”
Next, the conference-level nominations will be forwarded to the NCAA Woman of the Year Selection Committee, which will choose the Top-10 honorees in each of the three NCAA Divisions. The NCAA will announce the Top-30 honorees in September on ncaa.org.
“Opportunities are plentiful, as college athletes can now license and profit from their name, image, and likeness as well as launch their own merchandising companies,” Parron said. “Conservative estimates are that some All-American college athletes are earning as much as $500,000 to $1 million through social media marketing alone, including personalized video greetings, sponsored posts, and signing on as brand ambassadors for corporations.”
There are a handful of FBS records and milestones that could be broken and reached this season, respectively. (Looking at you, Liberty quarterback Malik Willis, Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder, and Ohio State wide receivers Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson.)
After the U.S. Supreme Court sat back and did nothing on Wednesday, a law went into effect in Texas that bans most abortions after six weeks. Next March, Fort Worth will host some of the first and second-round games of the Men’s NCAA Tournament, and San Antonio will be a regional site for the Sweet 16 and Elite 8. The NCAA needs to boycott Texas.
UTEP has been on the wrong end of several FBS records — former Houston quarterback Case Keenum holds the record for the most career passing yards gained against one opponent (1,882 yards against UTEP) and former TCU running back LaDainian Tomlinson has the record for career rushing yards against one opponent (788 yards against UTEP) — but the Miners are also in the FBS record book for positive reasons, too.
In March, I suggested that the NIT and the NCAA Women’s Tournament consider boycotting Texas after Gov. Greg Abbott lifted the mask mandate. Six months later I’m trying it again as Abbott is hellbent on risking the health and safety of millions of his citizens, and the future students and recruits that could be considering going to school in the state.
The Longhorns were able to gain a bit of momentum back, but the Gophers still lead this set 15-12. Neither team is playing at their best, it looks a little sloppy out there with a lot of unforced errors on both ends. Texas is currently hitting a low .050, and Minnesota is not that far ahead with a .100 hitting efficiency.
In order for this record to be topped, it would take a pair of quarterbacks — likely future NFL starters — to average roughly 700 passing yards apiece. That's not happening.
Grand Valley State is also carrying momentum from the outdoor season after winning the team’s first title at 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championship. A big part of their success was from their distance runners, led by Harding’s 5000 crown and runner-up finish in the 10,000 as part of a strong double.
Newsom on Tuesday signed Senate Bill 26, which moved up the implementation date of California's athlete pay law from Jan. 1, 2023, to Sept. 1. State legislators wanted SB 26 to take effect immediately so the state's colleges and universities wouldn't be confused by the NCAA's interim suspension of its rules against name, image and likeness compensation.
Predictably, a firestorm swirled after the college basketball national championships — hardly the first for the organization — and the NCAA followed a tried-and-true method: calling a lawyer.1 The first batch of findings from the inquiry into inequities in championship events was released earlier this month, and focused specifically on Division I men’s and women’s basketball. “While there is near universal support for treating student-athletes equitably,” the report read, “there unfortunately is also deep distrust in the NCAA’s willingness and ability to make the necessary changes to achieve that goal.”
The fourth set was point-for-point when Parra headed back to the service line .. she has gone on some big-time serving runs for the Longhorns all match long. But Samedy picked up a big side out and kept the match tight. A big-time block from Jenna Wenaas for the Gophers tied it up at 13.
The kicking gods traveled 270 miles up the road from College Station to sprinkle magic kicking dust onto Johansson's right foot in Abilene. He was on target from 69 yards out, so much that the officials said it would've been good from 75 yards.
Each stop led to another significant point in his life. A girl in the stands caught his eye during a game, and he spent halftime using the 24 words of English he knew to acquire her phone number. He succeeded, and the pair dated for five to six months until he got a call.
Things are moving so quickly, in fact, that it has a Wild West kind of feel where the law seems to be one step behind the money.
ESPN and ESPN2 were both used for the CWS and WCWS, but all three of the softball final series games were on ESPN, while two of the three games in the baseball final series were on ESPN2. The baseball games were all in prime time; though viewership of the Women’s College World Series spiked by 37 percent relative to 2019, the deciding final game of the tournament was held on a Thursday afternoon.

Rushing for 1,500 yards in a season is a terrific accomplishment for a player — one likely to earn the player all-conference, if not All-America, honors. But to do so in just five games is potentially unsustainable, and that's why Sanders' record, amid a season in which he rushed for 2,628 yards in just 11 games (!), is safe in our opinion.
CC McGraw has been a big reason for the Gophers success this match but especially in the third set. She has been keeping them alive play after play. She notched seven of her 18 digs in the third set. Melani Shaffmaster, the Gopher's sophomore setter, is up to 29 assists and one kill, but a good one. Check it out
The Gophers outhit the Longhorns .394 to .190 in the third with only two errors compared the Longhorn's five. Samedy is up to 17 kills, a usual stat line for the star, Jenna Wenaas is up to eight kills and Landfair chipped in nine.
The owner of four individual SEC titles during his career, Casas’ move would not be considered intra-conference despite the fact that the University of Texas recently accepted an invitation to join the SEC. The Longhorns won’t officially join the conference until July 2025. Texas A&M and Texas were formerly conference foes in the Big 12 before the Aggies departed in 2012.
Unlike in March, boycotting Texas for next year’s March Madness events won’t put the NCAA in a tough logistical spot, given that they have ample time to find other locations. Besides, the Bathroom Bill is proof that the outcry from political and social issues can make the NCAA change its plans. In April of 2017, the NCAA lifted its ban against the state of North Carolina as it refused to hold championship events there after a law was passed that removed anti-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, requiring the latter to use bathrooms in public facilities that aligned with the gender on their birth certificate. North Carolina’s legislature and governor repealed the controversial bill, as the state was supposed to host first and second-round NCAA tournament games in 2017. Those games wound up moving to South Carolina.
Samedy is up to nine kills on the match for the Gophers, but Landfair has been quiet since her hot start in the first set. She didn't notch a kill in the second.
“There’s an opportunity that the pandemic exposed,” Jackson said. “We’re not thinking about equity, and it makes us vulnerable to disparities. We’ve got to learn from this experience, because there’s an opportunity and a lesson here to do better.”
“It’s incredible that — even if it were for the reason of preserving the status quo — people at NCAA HQ weren’t thinking about, ‘Well, if we’re using the educational opportunities of college sports, and also the gender equity of college sports as part of the defense of the enterprise, we at least better get the gender equity part right,’” said Victoria Jackson, a former national champion runner and current professor of sports history at Arizona State University. “It really exposed this critique we have that you throw up this, like, Title IX shield and say, ‘Hey, what about the women!?’ It’s never really from a position of actually caring about gender equity.”
Texas led almost the whole way in set 2, relying heavily on their star player, Logan Eggleston. This time around they outhit the Gophers .225 to .087. Eggleston leads with eight kills and Phillips has seven kills on .462 hitting efficiency. Four Texas players have over six kills.
It's almost unfathomable to see a stat line of 12 receptions, 326 yards, 27.2 yards per reception and...zero touchdowns. Burleson's effort against San Jose State ranks tied for eighth all-time in single-game receiving yards and yet, he never made it to the end zone. In fact, he only scored two touchdowns in 2001, despite finishing the season with 53 receptions and 737 receiving yards.
The Longhorns picked up right where they left off in set 2 and utilized a tactic that they were known for last season: extremely tough serving. They proved to have a new serving weapon this year though, aside from just Eggleston. Melanie Parra has a wicked serve. She went on a 4-0 serving run to start the set before Samedy ended the run.
“There isn’t a gender component for attendance to NCAA championships,” Johnson assured FiveThirtyEight in an email. “The attendance is set by each championship sports committee that oversees a specific championship. These committees use several factors in determining attendance at the venue where competition will take place.”
At the Art Adamson Invite in November, where he set what remain his lifetime best times in the 200 IM and 100 back, Casas dropped a 1:36.62 200 back from the ‘B’ final despite showing up in a walking boot earlier in the day.
What started out as a messy match turned into a high-caliber volleyball battle that we have all been looking forward to. The Gophers rose to the challenge and improved as the match went on against the experienced Longhorns roster. The Gophers have some new components to their team, and head coach Hugh McCutcheon must be happy with the way his team battled against the No. 1 team in the nation. If anything, this proved the Gophers will be a force to be reckoned with this season. They loaded their non-conference schedule for this very reason: rising to the occasion, learning from mistakes, getting tested against good teams.
