In January 2004, Regions Financial merged to $5.9 billion with Union Planters Bank. The merger significantly increases the presence of Regions in Tennessee, where Union Planters was the market leader.
In May 2006, Regions Financial announced that it acquired AmSouth Bancorporation, another bank based in Birmingham, amounting to $10 billion.
