A novel recreating the lives and loves of an earlier generationBy Charles BCongratulations to Janet Kleinman, the author, who has successfully added flesh, sinew and psychological realism to the dry bones of the oral and written historical account she was able to uncover.This is a well written story of a family leaving eastern Europe and making a life for themselves during the Roaring Twenties, the depression and WWII.. We live, with them, as they rise above the poverty of the lower east side of New York. We share their joys pains, and romances as they build successful lives, and we watch as one son goes off to serve in the Second World War and then participates in smuggling displaced persons to pre-Israel Palestine while searching for a fragment of the family which has hopefully survived the holocaust.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It was exciting and couldn't put the book down until I found out what happened to the main character. A fast and easy read. Tell J.Kleinman to keep on writing.
