Entertaining start to a military sagaBy Michael DeStefanoHistory and fantasy come together in this entertaining start to a military saga plainly set in conflict and war, yet cleverly navigates the trials and tribulations of humanity. In this instance, Shamey’s story is timeless. The cover instantly draws the reader to the main character, Sergeant Dagan Sharaf as his armor is described in detail. The author’s use of contemporary dialogue and military terminology was distracting at first, until it was clear his Legion was not from ancient Rome. Think present-day mindset with similar limitations of technology, weaponry and transportation used in the ancient world. The accompanying map—though small—does an admirable job helping the reader to follow the action of Dagan’s young band of legionnaires.Shamey’s use of religious overtones to color the diversity of characters that make up Company E and how Dagan manages to lead his force, made up of essentially green recruits, some old veterans and two servant characters (Neway and Adinew) picked up aboard a transport vessel, contributes to the depth of the story and foreshadows the unknown adversary Company E is only beginning to face as book one comes to a close. The first book of an epic series, it’s not designed as a stand-alone novel. However, its strength of character design, scope, and believability makes for an attractive story. From a storytelling standpoint, it would have made better sense to place the “lore” summary at the beginning to set up the action in June, 1204 of the NKE (New Katoran Era). It provides clarity and better sets up the action that follows.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Kings and LegionnairesBy Peru EditorI had a feeling about this book from the beginning and it didn't disappoint. The book starts with an interesting sequence where an ambassador says the wrong things (by the command of his master) to a king and is dealt with as expected. As a reader, you're instantly drawn into the work. N. J. Samey does a good job of juggling the actions and the private thoughts of several characters leading to an inevitable result. The content is good enough that you'll find yourself reflecting on the prologue, which means the author has succeeded. After the prologue, the real story begins as you meet a group of soldiers out on a training mission that becomes all too real. For me, it's a lot easier to identify with grunts in the trenches than kings sitting on cushions, and I instantly appreciated the interaction of the characters. The training chapters feel real, and you can tell that Shamey has a background in this kind of scenario.Although this book fits into the fantasy genre, it is rooted in human interaction, which is always the secret to writing a successful fantasy novel. All too often, fantasy is dismissed as an inferior genre (not by me), but such a dismissal is just an act of intellectual arrogance since the genre is wide open to extremely creative treatment of very human issues. Shamey gets this, and the trials of the characters are the type of things that there is benefit in studying. This is a real fantasy book from an author with valuable insight presented in an appealing way. That's what you're looking for, whether you know it or not.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Solid read.By Austen R.Disorder of War did a pretty good job keeping me entertained. Not only is Dagan's story interesting, but the lore is pretty well thought out too! It's a think and vibrant world, filled with different religions, cultures, and interesting characters (Gill all the way!) I would say that the only thing stopping me from giving it five stars would be that I personally felt it didn't have quite enough surprises, or character depth for me. For the most part, we follow Dagan around, as he goes off to war and see the relationships he builds with his men. This is fine, and needed mind you, but for a good portion of the book it doesn't feel like there is much beyond him and Company E just following orders and fighting. But, all in all, I would definitely recommend this good Indie novel.
