Lots of loose endsBy Nora WileyCONTAINS SPOILERSAt first I was delighted to read such a well written book not filled with profanity, sex or drugs, but as the story wore on I began to have more and more questions. For example the "ghost" part of the story was pretty thin and sporadically mentioned. It could just as easily have been titled "A Day in the Life of the Average High School Junior." The story was 3/4 about high school life and bike riding and 1/4 about the ghost story which for me was rather disappointing. There was a rumor mentioned in the beginning of the story about "old man Stein" killing his wife then himself in the haunted house, yet no one of the characters bothered to further explore this rumor especially given that "old man Stein" turned out to be a relative of one of the main characters! If I found out my great great grandfather was an accused murderer, I'd be asking my parents some questions!I also noticed that when the boys decided to spend the night in the "old Stein place" and the ghostly apparition appeared and told them they would die, the main character said nothing to any adults as they began to die one by one.Errors began to pop up and editing became a little sloppy towards the end of the book, most of which was very minor, however, one thing that came up that bothered me quite a bit was that the author did not follow modern conventions of writing when referring to the main characters' friends' parents not as Mr. or Mrs. X, but as Mister and Misses X. Reminded me of writing not from this century and was very, at least for me, distracting.I think this could be a very good book given a rewrite to include more of the ghost story threaded throughout the story and including a little more explanation. The book ended rather abruptly, which could have been handled better.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This was a very good book for middle schooler'sBy Jeff CassanovaThis was a very good book for middle schooler's. It reminded me of when I read the original Hardy Boys when I was young. I liked the way he mixed the mystery and the coming of age of the main character. Very entertaining! I will not spoil the ending, but it was total surprise, and I remember saying out loud, "What ???"0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Story for Young Adult ReadersBy J. ThomasThis is a great read for young adults/teenagers. We read it on a long road-trip and everyone was in suspense. We really enjoyed reading the parts about the Chesterton, Indiana area since I grew up in Chesterton. The author developed the characters very well and was adept at engaging us with their struggles as teens. The story is not too scary for young pre-teens. We have a 13 and 11 year old and they loved it. The ending is very unexpected.
