Read before You sign on the dotted line!....By Frank Laudano"Shock Treatment" is a good read. The author used his extensive background in real estate and intimate knowledge of his home town to build a solid mystery novel. He presented his characters in a manner that readers could feel that they knew them. His introducing the villains made the book easy to read and understand what was happening. He paced the writing so as to keep the reader interested, which could have been a problem, because of the subject matter involved in the plot of the novel. He also took the time to explain how a real estate transaction could be compromised when record keeping was done illegally for financial gain.I could not help but think that Mr Caffrey, though impressed with the novels of Dick Francis, wrote in a very similar method of another great Mystery Writer, Stu Kaminsky, who used his knowledge of his home town andhad a main character that resembled the personality of Mr. Caffrey's main character. fsl2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. White shoes, gumshoes and the lonely heroBy Hugh GilmoreI very much enjoyed reading this book. It begins simply and innocently and then adds puzzling details which before too long take on an ominous tone. From there on, it's one man against the system and everyone becomes a suspect. The plot line, involving several murders (that happen "offstage") comes to center on a complicated real estate swindle that was fascinating. I especially loved going behind the scenes at a Philadelphia "white shoes" law firm and learning some fascinating details that would justify whatever suspicions anyone's ever held about such firms. The characters are interesting, believable and sinister. A very good reads, especially for the author's debut novel.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good book - very worth reading.By L,D.I share others' sentiments - I knew this was Mr. Caffrey's first book, and I wondered if the book would hold my attention. It did! I also read as much as I could at one sitting, having a hard time moving on to other tasks. I'm from Philadelphia also - might not have bought the book otherwise, but it wasn't just the Philly parts that were fun and riveting; the plot was full of surprises, and intelligent ones. The characters were well-developed. I enthusiastically recommend the book.L.D.

About the AuthorGene Caffrey is a retired Philadelphia lawyer and real estate investor who has had a life-long love of sports and the novels of Dick Francis. He has been married for nearly 50 years and is the father of two grown children. His familiarity with the gritty streets of Philadelphia and his near total recall of its characters informs his writing with a refreshing authenticity. He now divides his time between Philadelphia, Sarasota (FL) and his farm in New Jersey.
