A Record of Buddhistic kingdoms: being an account by the Chinese monk Fa-hsien of travels in India and Ceylon (A.D. 399-414) in search of the Buddhist books of discipline by Faxian Review

A Record of Buddhistic Kingdoms is a good reference source that takes into account the religious tradition of Asia as witnessed by Chinese Buddhist Monk Faxian. Although his travelogue is brief and appears more as a journal, one should not discount the succinct appearance because the contents and all 40 chapters are a wealth of information are an important piece of history that also implements significant figures who helped to contribute to the influence of Buddhism throughout the Asian landscape bridging a great relationship between the East and West, Alexander the Great, Kanishka, and Indian leaders Chandragupta and Asoka as well as what Faxian observed within the kingdoms in terms of the display of ritual, tradition, and community that Buddha initially encountered during his path of enlightenment at Sankasya Kingdom.Overall, the electronic edition of this primary document provides readers the convenient access to refer to the source at any time. And the brief accounts along with the footnotes allow readers to easily find the definitions and explanations of what is being discussed.

While I have come across many chapters of this text I always wanted to read the whole text. In opening the book it was so well written with great commentaries the text became a research of its own where it makes the reader a companion. Learned a lot about these sacred places and plan on visiting the Indian journey to eyewitness it ice this corvid~19 epidemic fades.

I have to say there is nothing I dislike, but can,t comprehend the dates.Only wish this work gets distributed to Chinese people at least now. Govt of china can afford financially to do this & shed light on the works of this Great missionary adveturer. Would reccomend this to people who believe " religions are like small rivers merging & mixing in the "ocean of Cosmic religious tolerance" Dr v.a.Tony Ram

You have to be something of a Buddhist buff to really appreciate this book. I give it two stars for the general reader, but it is a wonderful first hand account of Indian and Chinese Buddhism from 399 and 412 as the monk FaXian traveled from monastery to monastery on foot.

Love this sort of first-hand record, but this one is just a rambling record of unpronouncable place names and stupid legends. I suspect much of it is fake anyway, and this old joker didn't even go to most of the places claimed.
