Murder in the Manor (A Lacey Doyle Cozy Mystery—Book 1) by Fiona Grace Review

Oh my. Very silly. The main character gets her divorce papers in the AM before she leaves for work and by that night has taken a flight to London. She doesn’t even pack any clothes so presumably she carries her passport around with her? She takes a 250£ taxi ride from Heathrow to a seaside town. She stumbles onto a place to live at what sounds like half-term school holidays, rents a storefront, does a business plan PLUS applies for and is approved for a work visa in the UK in about a week.I realize this is fiction but I was really unable to suspend disbelief over the basics here.Fortunately the book was free on Kindle so I only lost the hour or so I gave it to get 30% in.

I found this book boring in so many places. Going over the same issues much to often. And what is very peculiar is at the end of the book where it gives a view of the next book Laceys name is now Ella Rose and states she is having her first auction at her antique store. She, Lacey, just had her first auction at the ending of this book. Very confusing.

An interesting quick read, with characters that you like as well as ones you despise. However, distracting from the pleasant mystery were the number of mistakes. The editing left much to be desired! Right off the bat, the main character's last name and that of her husband's were mixed up. Then, toward the end, the main character's knuckles are "wrapping" against the door. And then other mistakes were peppered throughout. It's too bad that such simple errors detract from an otherwise cute book.

There are just too many errors and they make a lot of dissonance in the story. The story starts with her divorce papers being Doyle vs Doyle, then spends several pages with her talking about why she should take her maiden name back...which was Doyle. Then somehow she is able to clean her rental in an evening when it has sat empty for years...She rented it one afternoon and woke the next morning in a clean house. In honor of her father, who left the family when she was 7 never to be heard from again, she starts an antique store. Just too much conflicted details for me.

Murder in the Manor was a quick read because the writing style was very simplistic. The plot evolved too quickly making it unbelievable. The characters were uninteresting, making it difficult to become involved with them. The setting had potential for me, but that too left me wanting. If I were British I would be very insulted in that most of them were portrayed as rude and shallow.I hate to "quit" reading a book because sometimes I have been pleasantly surprised by stories that take a good turn. This book was disappointing throughout. Won't be reading anymore of this series.
