El Greco: Life and Work-A New History by Fernando Marías

Read Online and Download El Greco: Life and Work-A New History by Fernando Marías. The authoritative, illustrated life and work of El Greco, one of the world’s most influential and inimitable creative spirits.Domenikos Theotokópoulos, known to us as El Greco, was one of the seminal painters of the Spanish golden age. This magnificent volume features superb new reproductions of his most famous works, some of which have been cleaned and restored, revealing unknown facets of his art.Born in Crete in 1541 under Venetian rule, raised in the iconographic traditions of Byzantine art, and acquainted with both Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic practice, El Greco journeyed to Venice and Rome in the late Renaissance, before finding patronage in Spain at the court of Philip II. He was a painter not only of religious subjects but also of idiosyncratic portraits executed in his own dramatic and expressionistic style. He spent approximately half his life in Toledo, a city with which his name has become indelibly linked, although he was never fully accepted and was known there as a disputatious outsider. All this and more is detailed in this thorough, illustrated book. Many of El Greco’s most famous works are included: View of Toledo, The Adoration of the Shepherds, The Gentleman with His Hand on His Chest, Christ on the Cross Adored by Donors, as well as many others. 215 color illustrations

El Greco: Life and Work-A New History by Fernando Marías Review

I bought this book solely for the reproductions. I love El Greco paintings and have waited years for a book with a large number of high-quality images and detailed close-ups. This book satisfies my long wait. I don't expect a better one to come out any time within the next ten years. With that said, the book is not perfect. Some detailed images have been blown up to cover two whole pages. Yay! But the main focus of interest--usually the face--is placed right in the center of the two pages where much is lost in the page fold. Whaaa??? Even worse, there's absolutely no reason for this because the surroundings of the head are usually plain background. These two-page images would have been better as a cropped single page consisting of the head alone. Sigh! And like all modern books that reproduce paintings, the reproductions here are vastly different from the original paintings. In this case, the reproductions boost the color and exaggerate the textures. The images look dramatic, but they are very different from the paintings. Unfortunately, this difference between reproduction and original is true of all art books (and I do mean ALL). Sometimes the difference is washed out colors, other times it's wild value fluctuations. This book, like I said, has boosted color and exaggerated textures. Still, the images in the book are very satisfying in their own way and do retain the El Greco spirit. If you love El Greco paintings, I think you will be very happy with this book.

the quality of pictures is poor, too wash out, too yellow,.. the detail of very fine painting in boston museum right in the face of folder page , ????

My husband is a huge El Greco fan and bought it as a surprise gift for his birthday. It's a beautiful book and he was very touched.

Beatiful book. A wonderful addition to our art history.

Being that there are already two great books on El Greco, the best focusing on his relationship to modernism, but no comprehensive in-depth monograph exploring his artistic achievements, I was excited about this book. This being a Thames and Hudson, who usually do a great publishing job, I thought this would be a definite keeper!!. Boy was I wrong, especially when it comes to the reproductions, which is my main reason for buying art books. This books reproductions are appalling; the colors look washed out and desaturated, skin tones have a sickly bluish tone, and the color grading is badly executed, even compared to the so-so reproductions online, for which I did a side by side comparison. For anyone looking for an informative and in-depth look at El Greco, his life and most importantly his ground breaking and singular art, this book isn't going to come close to giving you that. I didn't even bother to read it, it was so crappy, I just returned it. I'll wait ti'll something better comes along cause this definitely didn't tickle my fancy.
