Starting Therapy: A Guide to Getting Ready, Feeling Informed, and Gaining the Most from Your Sessions by Faith Freed Review

Starting Therapy is the perfect introduction to anyone who might be struggling enough with personal issues to consider therapy. It's clearly and helpfully written, completely accessible for a lay person, and engaging enough to be easy and fun to read. It can only help anyone's therapy to be made aware ahead of time and to give some thought to the issues such as consent, confidentiality, payment, and certification requirements. And Faith's own professionalism is most evident in the clear and urgent delineation of the difference between therapy and friendship. The writing is clear and straightforward, with flashes of humor and thought-provoking insights, such as “But it's you who must go out into the world and use the resistance of life to gain strength.” And the self-affirmation throughout, that you are in charge, and have every right to express your needs and to trust your instincts, is something that anyone considering therapy could only find empowering. I highly recommend this book.

In Starting Therapy, licensed psychotherapist Faith Freed offers the uninitiated and curious an open window to the often-shadowed experience of beginning therapy. Her gentle, encouraging voice leads readers through what to expect in therapy sessions, demystifies the most common approaches and modalities therapists use, and empowers the therapy client with suggestions about how to get the most out of the experience. It’s a well-organized and breezy read. It’s just what you need if you feel you might benefit from therapy but also feel stuck about getting started. Personally, I find it challenging to begin things I know I should do to take care of myself. Once I get going, I can write every day, stay hydrated, and make my dentist appointments. But these good habits and practices need momentum, and they can feel scary at first. I’ve benefited from therapy myself, and at certain periods in my life, found it crucial to my health and functioning. But I remember a time when starting therapy seemed daunting, mysterious, and even suspicious.Starting Therapy is the book I needed back then, and Freed delivers with approachability and a generous spirit, just what I expected from this author’s second book.

I wish I read this guidebook before my first therapy session. Faith Freed has taken on a complex subject and walks you step by step through one of the most personal experiences you will ever have. She brilliantly simplifies the therapeutic process and abolishes the fears, confusion, and concerns everyone harbors before that first appointment. This not only steadies the nerves but is also financially smart. It took me three or four sessions to loosen up and trust the process. If I had read this book I would have been off and running even before I walked through the therapists door saving me a couple hours of my time and a few bucks to boot. I would recommend this book to anyone including psychotherapists and doctors who could hand this primer to new clients. It's that good.

Starting Therapy was fantastic. Faith Freed’s warm sense of humor and conversational style made it a pleasure to read, and it truly succeeds at demystifying the therapeutic process. I can see this book empowering so many more people to get the help they need, as well as to benefit from the journey of self discovery that is therapy.Faith Freed’s words sparkle on every page, and the love for her craft shines through as a licensed therapist. She walks you through what to expect, what not to expect, and how to get the most out of the process. Freed has a magical way of normalizing any hesitations, as well as reassuring you in the voice of a true professional who walks her talk in this definitive guidebook.

STARTING THERAPY by Faith Freed is a great guide to approaching therapy. It gives you the information you need and a preview of what the experience is like. If you've never had therapy, this is how to do it without discomfort or fear. If you're feeling stuck in your life, if you're facing a big decision, if you're having trouble in a relationship, if you're tied up in knots and you don't know why, remember that therapy can help you figure out what's going on. This book will show you how to get started.
