HILLARY'S BACK! a gripping crime mystery full of twists (DI Hillary Greene Book 18) by FAITH MARTIN Review

Why do you not want Hillary to be happy? She finally had someone who loved her despite her flaws and you killed him off??? I waited 16-17 books for this incredibly fascinating and strong woman to find a love worthy of her. I am not happy! Arrgghh! I cannot believe you did this. I just don't understand it.

I loved the Hillary Greene series and have read all of them. This series' strength is in the characters and their development over time as Hillary manages to solve rather simple but intriguing mysteries. I tried to read Martin's Ryder and Loveday series but her formula didn't work for such shallow characters so I quit part way through the first one.I was excited to see a new Hillary Greene book and preordered it. It was disappointing at best. It felt like Martin used the book to act as a springboard to a new series, since Hillary is present but she remains static and undeveloped.The book's main character is the wounded soldier but he is not developed enough to move beyond a stereotype, and the actual mystery leaves you with a why bother feeling that is even reflected in the characters at the end.I doubt I'll waste my money again on this author even though at her best I enjoyed her.

Something is missing in this book. I enjoyed following along with Hillary and her new team, but it felt a bit “formula”. And killing off the man Hillary loved and was happy with - between books - felt kind of lazy on the author’s part. How much more interesting Hillary would be with a real life relationship outside of work to deal with! To bring Hillary back without the “happy ending” from the last book seems as if the author is more concerned with churning out another seller than caring about her main character as she used to. And surely by now, Hillary can afford to dress normally, rather than in a dated, weird coloured trouser suit!

I loved this series and groaned when I'd finished the last book. Imagine my joy when an eighteenth release, "Hillary is Back" was announced. I couldn't wait to get my hands on the book. Imagine my disappointment when it was nowhere as good as the previous books.It goes from one interview to the other. There is very little buildup of Gareth and none of Claire. And Hillary? Where are the emotions? How she feels? What happened in the immediate aftermath of Stephen's death? Yes it's a good plot and I didn't see the end coming but the book left me dissatisfied. Something was missing. And the issue around Gareth and his friend was left dangling We have no idea what happened.

I really enjoyed the book and mystery a usual. However, was not happy that Steven was killed off. Hillary is in her fifties, had difficult things happen to her. Why couldn't she have been left with a relationship? It doesn't change her work. And I'm a sucker for a good romance!
