Colonel Hugh North, the hero of a number of books by author Van Wyck Mason, is on a security mission to shadow a leading rocket scientist who is returning to Bangkok in an attempt to locate his missing wife. The scientist’s importance and intimate knowledge of the U.S. missile program make it imperative that he does not fall into the hands of Soviet spies, already aware of their arrival. Along the way, North encounters beautiful women and some of Bangkok’s kingpins. F. Van Wyck Mason (1901-1978) published more than 60 books in his long career, including Colonel Hugh North thrillers, mysteries and science fiction.

Colonel Hugh North is travelling from Honolulu to Bangkok under the assumed name of Charles Boyden. North's mission is to protect Dr. Hans Bracht who is aboard the same airplane but unaware of the Colonel's identity.Dr. Bracht had been one of Hitler's top rocket scientists during the early days of World War II. He somehow escaped from Germany during the war and ended up in Thailand where he acquired a Thai bride named Tao Muong. Later they were both admitted to the United States and given U.S. citizenship. Recently Bracht had been working in Cape Carnaveral as head of the top-secret Project Galaxy. Tao Muong disappeared suddenly and was believed to have gone to Thailand. When Dr. Bracht insisted on pursuing her alone, Colonel North was assigned to follow him and make sure he did not fall into Russian hands before returning to the United States.After arriving in Bangkok, Bracht heads for the Imperial Hotel. North will try to stay in a nearby room. The hotel is the temporary headquarters for an American movie company which is shooting a film in Thailand. Even before North and Bracht reach the hotel, someone tries to kill them as they share a cab from the airport. North has to figure out fast who the Russian agents are among the hotel guests. There are several people with the movie company who may have Communist backgrounds. North is also interested in Chu Hoong who is a multi-millionaire manufacturer of a potent drink called Dragon's Tooth Elixir and also the owner of the Imperial Hotel.North as usual is pursued by beautiful women and is invariably interrupted during any promising romantic interludes by circumstances beyond his control. Often the interruption comes in the form of the delivery of an urgent message.The story reflects the growing ties between North Vietnam and Russia and the tensions existing in the region after France's defeat in Indochina in 1954 and before the resumption of hostilities in Vietnam in the early 1960's.

Colonel North #20: “Secret Mission To Bangkok” by Van Wick Mason. The plane from Hong Kong to Bangkok, Thailand, carried a variety of personages. Colonel North, of Army G-2 was interested in one man however, Hans Bracht who was traveling incognito as Harry Barrows. Bracht was a rocket scientist on America’s Project Galaxy program. His wife, the beautiful Tao Muong was missing, and suspected of being kidnapped by the Reds to get the scientist in their hands. North was there to see they didn’t. Someone on the plane may be the Red handing the kidnapping: Miss Lita Naline, a Hollywood star of mysterios background; Mr. Anton Carss, Hollywood producer; Mr. John Wallen, another Hollywood actor; Mr. Lex Ross, a Hollywood actor who once had been a Red agent; Millionaire Chu Hoong, a big shot businessman in Bangkok; M. Georges Marchet, a Frenchman now of South Vietnam, and drug addict; Fraulein Mary Hollberg of West Berlin; and Mr. Boris Salenkov of Moscow. It was up to Colonel North to protect Bracht, and unmask the Red agent. The story was a bit slow, as we’re introduced to all the suspects, and though things are happening, Colonel North doesn’t do too much until the climax. But it’s a slam-bang ending, with a air fight between plans when the Red agent tries to flee to North Vietnam with Bracht. There are actually two mysteries in the story, the second interfering with the first, mudding the waters for the G-2 operative.
