Gregorovius is first of all a great raconteur. I enjoyed to read his discriptions of Ravenna and Elba in a world long gone now (the tomb of Theodoric is no longer standing in a grassy swamp). For him it was not long ago that Napoleon was on Elba, the way he presents the well known facts is great. Especially his 'what if' Napoleon had decided not to return to France, but turn his attention to uniting Italy and being a new Emperor of Rome. It might have worked. Also as always I am impressed with his enormous hoard of small details. His descriptions of paintings and sculptures is great, they must have been in a time when coloured pictures of them were not available.But one warning: once started, it it difficult to stop.I find the kindle edition of this work quite good.
