The Mystery of the Iron Duke: A Clean & Sweet Regency Historical Romance Novel by Fanny Finch Review

Nice, clean Regency romance with an HEA.Lady Catherine Cartwright is to be courted by the Duke of Windermere. However, she is frightened because he is some years older than she. She has also heard dreadful rumors about him. She tries to plan a way to escape but winds up meeting him anyway. Lady Catherine feels he is probably a good man but is still wary because of the rumors. The Duke and Lady Catherine have many incorrect assumptions about each other but because of their attraction, try to find out the truth.Lady Catherine's parents are status climbers and terribly obnoxious but the Duke and Catherine prevail. This is a nice story with good growth for both of the main characters. I did get a little tired of the insecure back and forth between the main characters but it wasn't enough for me not to finish the novel.Technically, the author's writing is still rather juvenile, with errors and not often very good sentence structure, but she is improving. There are some typos, missed commas, sentences ending incorrectly with prepositions, some modern language and incorrect word choices, but not as bad as some past novels. All in all, a decent hours' read.

This book could have had a cute story, but it was excruciating to read. The writing was awkward and stilted. The characters were not very likeable. And the writing was very inconsistent. Was the duke wanting a bride or resistant to the idea? Why was his employee in negotiations with her family if the duke didn't want a bride? Why did he invite her to visit only to be rude to her and try to trap her in a poor response? The characters changed characteristics several times per page, it seemed. I was so glad to finish this book so I didn't have to read it any more.

The Duke of Windermere. Catherine's parents, Lord and Lady Abingdon are in negotiations to betroth her to him and yet all Catherine knew about this mysterious Duke, other than he was some 15 years older than her, were the rumors running rampant among the ton that he was infamous, that every woman the Duke showed interest in had one thing in common. They all ended up dead. Who was this man she was being thrust at? Her parents had dealt with the Duke's man Faversham and all her parents cared about was wealth and status. They cared naught for their daughter's welfare or that she might love or be loved. It did not signify. Her parents hustle her to a ball at the Duke's home where she overhears even further rumors that wherever he travels a body is left behind and what's more that he turns into a great beast, red-eyed and howling, roaming the halls of his residence seeking the ghost of his first love! This and more and Catherine cannot take much more. The Duke has not appeared yet and not one to panic, she still has an extreme concern about what her parents are pushing her into. Must she in her obedience to her parents submit to a murderer? A monster? What is she to do? She leaves the great room to find a place to be alone, finding a room with a balcony to which she retreats to sort her thoughts. Only when she gets there does she spot a tall man already standing to the side in silent thought. At first shy from surprise she opens to a quick wit and they have quite witty banter before the stranger asks her about returning to the ballroom and if she might dance with him. Only when they enter the ballroom everything stops with all eyes on them. When he mentions to the musicians to keep playing and as they dance Catherine finally catches on with whom she is dancing! The story starts out with a cynical duke and an independent thinking yet obedient lady who unfortunately has obnoxious status climbing parents who you will want to send to the guillotine (if it were France!) and how Regency era people have patience for people like this is beyond me! But the parents and Catherine go to the Duke's country estate where the Duke's "secret" is revealed, causing the parents to grab their daughter, terminate the betrothal, and later bribe the Duke about his "secret" (which Catherine knows nothing about). The Duke and Catherine had fallen in love with each other but when the Duke writes to Catherine his letters never make it to her and she thinks he has forgotten her. Taking the bribe money her greedy parents find another man to betroth her to and the Duke finds out about this. Enough is enough! How this is resolved is truly heart warming and I will say I read this whole book at one sitting as it was that good! Fanny does a tremendous job on this story and I have put it into my favorites pile. Hope you will too.

The only real mystery in this is why the heroine ever falls for the putative hero, Benjamin. The Duke is manipulative, suspicious, and moody. He interprets every action of Lady Catherine’s in the worst possible light and makes cruel fun of her when her avaricious parents bring her to stay at his estate. Her resemblance to Patient Griselda eventually wins him over and he falls in love with her. However, he has a brother, to whom he is even more cruel. Half-brother, actually, since the fact that he is referred to as “Mr. Dunbar” rather than “Lord Daniel” indicates that although he is the younger son of a duke, he is not the legitimate child of a ducal marriage but the child of the previous duke and another woman. However, the boys were apparently brought up together and served in the Army more or less together. Daniel suffered brain damage. His brother, instead of setting him up in a quiet household with the attendants he can easily afford, tells everyone his brother did not survive his convalescence, thus cutting him off from his Army friends and any relatives he may have. He keeps Daniel imprisoned in a room in his principal country residence. The prison is not very effective, since Daniel regularly escapes and on one occasion encounters Benjamin’s then-fiancée, who is so startled she falls down a flight of stairs and breaks her neck. This is the mysterious secret of the plot. While Benjamin and Catherine are falling in love, Daniel escapes again. Catherine, who has the good fortune to encounter him in the garden rather than on a staircase, is frightened but realizes he is harmless and rather touching. Her parents are horrified and carry her off. They also blackmail Benjamin, threatening to tell society about his brother.Interminable agonies on the part of both Benjamin and Catherine ensue. Neither of them seems to have the least backbone or ability to plan an elopement or even to maintain the least confidence in each other’s affections once they are physically separated Finally, Benjamin realizes that he has been an idiot and attends a ball given by a friend, at which he re-introduces Daniel to a perfectly pleasant and accepting set of aristocrats. Since Catherine is also at the ball, he proposes to her, tells off her parents, and all ends happily.
