I Hope You Get This Message by Farah Naz Rishi Review
There were a lot of things I liked about this book. The main thing that I just loved was all of the non-white/straight/neurotypical elements were treated just as elements of the characters rather than the defining conflict for them. Like yeah-- you can deal with these things and also just be a normal teenager. The concept was also really interesting.However, I felt that sometimes the pace lagged, and the concept-- especially the alien transcription sections-- was not used in a way that I felt added anything particularly interesting.
I appreciated the diverse characters in Rishi's novel that today's young adults can definitely relate to. Mental health, sexuality, family dynamics, race, and supernatural forces are only some of the complex topics covered in this book. I found the unique storyline engrossing, and I was devastated with each setback the characters faced on their own personal - and physical - journeys. I would have liked more time with Cate and Adeem - the majority of the narrative was told from Jesse's perspective, and I found him to be the like-able character. Other reviewers mentioned their disappointment with the ending, but I actually enjoyed the open-ended and slightly hopeful tone that lets the reader draw their own conclusions. I'm recommending this book to my YA friends & would love to read more from this author in the future!
Full of heart and relatable human experiences, I absolutely loved this story. The ending was a bold move, leaving the fate of Earth and these characters unclear, perhaps setting it up for a sequel? The writing style and voice was pleasant to read, I look forward to reading more from this author in the future!

This book packed an emotional punch. It was one of those rare books that was just exactly the right length and carried the perfect amount of narrative tension throughout.
