This book, Psychosocial Support for Humanitarian Aid Workers: A Roadmap of Trauma and Critical Incident Care, by Fiona Dunkley, offers a necessary and crucial contribution to understanding those needs and how to approach. The basis of this book is a trauma awareness guide for all staff whose work exposes them to trauma. Dunkley manages to provide a practical guide for methods and techniques and possible systems to implement.As a person working with the mental health piece of the humanitarian aid world for over ten years, I am impressed with Dunkley’s ability to provide a book that applies to all persons working in the field of humanitarian assistance, as well as survivors of trauma themselves.This book delivers precisely what Dunkley summarizes in her conclusion: “This book has taken you on a journey of understanding trauma, highlighting the psychological risk to aid workers, explaining the physiology of trauma, sharing in-depth case studies to explore therapeutic trauma models, exploring coping strategies, managing critical incidents, highlighting pathways of care throughout deployments, and discussing the cultural relevance of trauma psychosocial services.” (Page 115).I love the dedication of the book from Dunkley, so loving and real. I, myself, have struggled with witnessing and experiencing trauma over the years, and know very well about “not listening” to my inner self and ignoring the clear signs to stop.She has created a resilience toolkit acronym using the word RESPECT. RESPECT recommends accumulating a right balance of resources that cover the following areas: relaxation, education, social, physical, exercise, creativity, and thinking. This toolkit of self-care and resilience building is excellent, down to earth with easy to follow, practical examples for each area.Lastly, I want to acknowledge my connection to her statement of her work with trauma: “I find working with trauma inspiring, not only because of witnessing the human spirit to survive but also because of the privilege to travel such difficult terrain with an individual who is suffering to a path of greater resilience, self-compassion and traumatic growth” (p.23).My only negative review point would be the expense of the hardcover version of this book, keeping it out of the hands of many who may benefit. The less expensive E-book version is available; however, I feel in the field this book in someone’s actual hand would be best.
