A beautifully wrought story about two boys who fall in love, with the complication that one is alive (but damaged and suffering from an unusual disability) while the other is dead (not much of a spoiler, considering the name of the novel). The author takes time to build their relationship and, particularly, to show the life of the living boy, crafting a rich, satisfying work. While reading this book, I wondered how the author would address the fact that the boys could never fully consummate their love and that one would grow older with time, but ultimately, these issues were deftly handled. The translator is obviously not a native English speaker, but I clearly understood what was being conveyed, and the lapses in grammar did not bother me. All in all, I loved this work, and I was sorry to see it end. I will look out for other books by this author in the future.
I made my way to the end of the novel although it was a bit slow and dry. There are a lot of grammar issues in the book but that might come from the translation. The main character is likable and you do feel for his loss and his issues. It's not a horrible novel by any means but it's not a page turner either. The ending is right in your face quick and it was actually a relief and not sad.
