The first half of this book is genuinely funny, and fun to play along with. The second half, however, is a major drag. The first half asks you which type of Miranda you are, which type of unfortunate male you may be dating (based on hilarious character breakdowns of men from the series), and details the fabulous Phoebe Philo-esque mode of dressing of Miranda Hobbes. They're the standouts from this section. The writing is simple but the jokes are great. You can imagine yourself sharing a cocktail with the writers and loving every minute of it. But then the second half comes along and you realise you'd probably want to cancel those plans. I mean, in the second half of the book they literally try to educate you on HOW TO USE EMAIL. Like their audience is a bunch of Floridian retirees trying to keep up with their grandkids on the InTErweBs. In the travel section, they also provide such gems as 'make sure you don't spend too much on international roaming.' How basic can you get? And then comes the chapter on sex, which is essentially a dressing down of any Miranda who is perfectly happy and satisfied with a vanilla sex life. The authors repeatedly remind their female readers of the right of men to be simply 'not that into you', but this is agency women aren't allowed when it comes to their own sex lives and preferred sexual behaviours. If you're a woman who's 'Just not that into' being assaulted or treated like an actual farmyard animal (Pony Play, anyone?!), you just need to chill out, Miranda, because you're the problem. Indeed, the only sexual activities the authors encourage women (and only women) to avoid are those that they find truly disturbing. Wow. What a standard to apply to your love life. Perhaps the authors, in encouraging (some) women to doubt/ignore/second guess their own sexual preferences, should understand that the men who engage in the activities they advocate are more likely to be sociopaths. Seriously, just read anything Roy Hazelwood has ever written about his experience hunting male serial killers. Or psych's DSM 5. But according to these authors, men with preferences like these raise no red flags whatsoever! If you find them not to your liking, again, YOU'RE the problem, Miranda. Just calm down and let someone handcuff you and beat you up, you uptight prude! I mean, can you imagine Miranda Hobbes putting up with that? Me either. Essentially, I think the problem with this book is that it was never meant to be a book. The authors ran out of ideas pretty fast, and so resorted to some pretty disappointing (and sometimes disturbing) writing after they'd exhausted the few genuinely funny sections they'd come up with. Their editors should have recognised their limitations and counselled them to put more thought into it, or to expand the topic of the book well beyond just Miranda alone. Then it might have been worth reading in its entirety. Or maybe they should have just written a few blogs and called it a day.
I pre-ordered it and read it the day it arrived. It has enough allusions to the show that fans will have fun hunting for easter eggs but it's relevant to modern women who appreciate the sisterly fist bump of "you did a good job making your life into what you always knew it could be." The illustrations are beautiful; her red hair pops on the pages and symbolizes her evolution as a character instantly. I'm biased because I'm a Miranda with a Miranda rising but I loved it and it made me appreciate the character as an icon for women who are navigating life today, in the here and now, not fifteen years ago. I also highlighted mine and took notes in it. But you're not surprised by that.
The overall tone was funny and entertaining but most of the quality content was repeated constantly. I was kind of hoping for a modern, edgy view on how Miranda is the woman of our time and that the other characters are fairly trite compared to Miranda but this was mostly a couple women who had a few glasses of wine and decided to string together some blog posts, albeit witty blog posts.
I bought a copy of this book as a gift for my sister who lives in Manhattan and is a big fan of the TV series. My sister also kinda looks like Miranda, so there's that. The authors clearly put a lot of work into the book and made it enjoyable -- even for people like me that don't really know the ins-and-outs of the show. Kudos for going the extra mile! It's also pretty damn funny and very clever. But most of all, it made me look like the perfect gift-giver. Thumbs up!
What you need on a night to relax, laugh and just be you. It was fun, an easy read and entertaining. I actually discovered that I am indeed an Amanda after all. I also enjoyed the design of the book.
