Apple Orchard Cozy Mystery Series: Box Set One (Books 1-3) (Apple Orchard Cozy Mystery Boxset Book 1) by Chelsea Thomas Review
If this is an author or series that is new to you, this is a great place to start. Fun, well-developed story and characters in a wonderful setting in upstate NY with stories that keep you interested and swiping away at your Kindle! The best thing about these books is that you can read them in any order, but they are best read in the order written if only to give you a little more backstory. However, if you get one before the other (rather than this set) you can start anywhere and not miss a beat! No spoilers in my reviews, just know that you won't be disappointed, there is a recurring trio that appears in all the books, and the stories (as well as characters) are likable, with twists and turns to keep you guessing. Humorous situations keep you laughing out loud and finally, you can obtain some of the recipes from the author (there is cookbook available, detail in the books! Slick, huh?) So, go ahead and dive into this fun mystery series, then, when you finish this box set, you'll be ready for the next one. Lastly, although I've read other books by this author and enjoyed them, in this case, I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I really hate to give a totally bad review out of respect for the author. However, these,Apple Orchard books are the worst cozy mysteries I have ever read. Chelsea, the character, not the author is a complete idiot. She is seems to have no social skills or even any kind of personality. She is a stick figure, always wrong about the murderer and spends most of her time "shrieking". She always says inappropriate things and can't stop talking until Miss May stops her. She is a totally underdeveloped character. Teeny is excess baggage who wants her own way all the time and contributed nothing to the story. Miss May is the only character that has been developed into a living breathing personality. She is human and only good reason to suffer the agony of reading this dribble. Sorry, author Chelsea. Your namesake is too annoying to spend,another minute,with her.
I would have liked these and even given them a 5-star review, as I liked the stories and characters, but there were too many inconsistencies in the storylines. In all three books. Something would be established and in the next chapter, it would be something else. It's been a few months since I read them and have already deleted them from my account, or I would be able to give examples.If you're not a detail person or mixed details don't both you, you'll enjoy these books. But, if you're like me, they'll drive you crazy, so stay away until someone does a good storyline edit.
This book series is awful. Why call it "Apple Orchard Cozy Mysteries" if the apple orchard has almost no bearing on the plot or characters? Miss May owns and runs an apple orchard, but seems to spend no time there at all. In fact, they spend more time at Teeny's restaurant. (Teeny, by the way, is annoying and contributes nothing to the story. I think she's supposed to be comic relief, but she's just obnoxious.)The main character, Chelsea, is so unlikeable and undeveloped. She keeps whining about her ex-fiance Mike (who has no bearing on the story except for the beginning of the first book), doesn't really do anything to solve the crimes, and is constantly correcting other people when they misspeak. And she seems to have no friends her own age and is really judgmental of other people. She's an interior decorator who works at her aunt's apple orchard, which doesn't make much sense, but whatever.The only character who contributes anything is Miss May. She's smart and knows how to take to people, so I feel like she should be the main character. However, as a former big-city prosecutor, she seems to have no problem contaminating crime scenes and illegally obtaining evidence.Overall, this book series is frustrating to read and I'm not even halfway through this box set. (And the second book in the set is apparently not the second because it mentions that they solved two murders, so I'm not sure if the books are out of order or there's one missing.)
I sometimes think cozy mysteries can get a little too cutesy, but this book strikes a good combination of cute and funny. I really liked the characters, Chelsea, Miss May, and Teeny. They're a little bit eccentric, a lot funny, and just enough feisty. The plots are interesting and kept me reading straight on till the end of the book. I would definitely recommend this book!
