Flat Earth and Hollow Earth Theories: A History of Strange Tales and Bizarre Beliefs about the Planet by Charles River Editors

Read Online and Download Flat Earth and Hollow Earth Theories: A History of Strange Tales and Bizarre Beliefs about the Planet by Charles River Editors. *Includes pictures*Includes a bibliography for further reading*Includes a table of contentsThe world is filled with mysteries, and even in the modern age, much of the planet remains unexplored. The depths of the oceans and the intricate and extensive cave systems that honeycomb some parts of the Earth are still largely unknown. Thus, it should come as no surprise that when it comes to this terra incognita, people have projected all sorts of ideas. Tales of sunken cities or lost civilizations are just some of the fanciful theories, and those could even be considered tame in comparison to the idea that Earth is flat and/or hollow. Despite this notion being rejected by the scientific community for millennia, and despite the fact that geology, volcanology, oceanography, and physics have all proven that the planet is not flat, the idea of a hollow Earth continues to intrigue people and gain eager and sincere adherents. This is made all the more remarkable by the fact that space programs are more than 60 years old, and people can fly around the world on planes in a matter of hours. Taken at face value, the ideas are patently ridiculous, but they provoke strong emotions in some people, sincere people who have thought extensively about their beliefs. These people feel they are privy to a hidden truth, and that the rest of the world is wrong and ignorant, but this feeling of mental superiority isn’t the only appeal in clinging to radical notions. There is also the thrill of adventure, the feeling that one is part of a dangerous minority attempting to overthrow the dominant paradigm. It is far better, some would feel, to live in a world full of mystery and hope than a decaying, “rational” world where everything can be explained but nothing solved.Flat Earth and Hollow Earth Theories: A History of Strange Tales and Bizarre Beliefs about the Planet offers a sampling of the many strange stories and theories regarding the planet’s surface and interior. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the theories like never before.

Flat Earth and Hollow Earth Theories: A History of Strange Tales and Bizarre Beliefs about the Planet by Charles River Editors Review

Review Written May 4, 2019Flat Earth By Charles Rivers EditorsThis is a history and analysis of the beliefs, alleged proofs, strange stories, and conspiracy theories regarding a Flat Earth surface. It includes a bibliography, and pictures of important people, places, and events. We can forgive the ancients for believing the world was flat, because the Earth was far too large for people to travel around it. Even when a person stands on a mountain, the world appears, for the most part flat. Further, the idea of a spinning globe hurtling through space is counterintuitive to those who had no understanding of astronomy or physics. It’s no surprise that during most of history, people assumed the Earth was flat. Indeed it is even more likely that most people gave no thought to geographic musings given the prevalance of diseases, hungar, war, and grinding manual labor prevalent in most people’s lives.By the Middle Ages, the majority of scholars and theologians agreed the Earth was a sphere, and during the Renaissance and modern times, few people with at least a modest education questioned whether the world was a globe. Belief in a globe lauched the Age of Discovery, and as European powers settled around the world, the globe model became widely known even among common people, assuming they ever thought otherwise. However, during the 19th century some eccentrics sparked a revival in Flat Earth belief by theorizing that the world was flat, while others postulated that even if the world was a globe, it was hollow with habitable space inside. Despite rejection of a Flat Earth by the scientific community for millennia, and despite the fact that geology, volcanology, oceanography, and physics have all proven that the planet is not flat, the idea of a Flat Earth continues to intrigue people even today and has gained eager and sincere adherents. This is made all the more remarkable because the space programs are more than 60 years old, and people can fly around the world on planes in a matter of hours. Taken at face value, this idea is patently ridiculous, but it provokes strong emotions in some sincere, intelegent people who have thought extensively about their beliefs. This book provides an excellent analysis of exactly what Flat Earther's believe, why they believe what they do, and why they agressively hang on to these beliefsThis book was professionally researched from numerous primary and secondary sources, written, and published by Charles Rivers Editors. This publishing house has produced an extensive collection of thoroughly researched, concise, informative, and well written historical texts. This collection is focused on chronicling the lives of historically significant persons, events, nations, and peoples. I have read many of their offerings and found each volume well written, researched, informative and presented with an unbiased perspective. This book delivers an interesting, straight forward account and analysis of the history of Flat Earth beliefs, proofs, stories, and conspiracy theories. It is well written, easy to read and comprehend. It is well researched and carefully documented to ensure accuracy. The narrative is engaging and enjoyable to read. This book provides a balanced, factual narrative of the Flat Earth belief and its adherents. Readers interested in this subject will enjoy this book.

Kindle e-bookI enjoyed reading the e-book Flat Earth: A History of Strange Tales, Bizarre Beliefs, and Conspiracy Theories about the Earth’s Surface. The book indicated that if the early man thought at all about the shape of the earth, he assumed it was flat. The first two Greek philosophers that argued the earth was a globe was Parmenides of Elea and Pythagoras. Some individuals in the early Christian church argued that certain passages in the Bible indicate that the earth is flat. The e-book noted that most scholars and theologians came to accept that the earth was a sphere by the Middle Ages. The e-book also described the proponents of the flat Earth from the 19th century to the present time. I got a kick out of reading about the Flat Earth Society of Canada; who spoofed the believers of the flat Earth theory. I was surprised to read that some Muslim scholars believe the earth is flat based on certain sections in the Bible and the Koran. Lastly, the Internet provides an echo chamber for those who have bizarre beliefs such as the Flat Earthers. I recommend this e-book to anyone interested in reading about bizarre beliefs. The e-book provides a nice reference list for anyone interested in further studying this issue.

Interesting. I was unaware there are flat landers in today’s world. One would think that the availability of knowledge in today’s world would have prevented this. Alas not to be. Charles Rivers publications present their material in a useful manner suitable for persons desiring basic information on the topic. And they accomplish their task in a minimal manner. This is not a complete book to end all speculation. But it will whet the reader’s appetite for more serious endeavors. Overall and enjoyable and informative read.B

People believe what they are exposed to. Flat earth is an interesting concept that seems to be have been obviously disproved. Sometimes science can be correct.

great factual account of how people enjoy believing something despite the proof. explains how when presented facts people would rather believe the lie they feel comfortable with. even when show pictures from space. Goes toward explaining the evangelical right
