MOST RECENT UPDATE: August 2020"This book is a toolbox of useful techniques that will help students and teachers alike! A must-read for those who want to learn more efficiently!" Yifan Xiao, MD, Senior Manager at Osmosis “I can only wish this was available when I was beginning medical school! From advice on creating study plans, to memory techniques, to the always important thoughts on work/life balance, there isn’t a page in this book that isn’t high yield for a new medical student.” Dr. Charles Cochran MD, Founder of LifeofaMedStudent.comWill medical school make or break you? Whether you’ve just gotten your acceptance or are already in the cadaver lab, you can get through (relatively) unscathed by learning from those who’ve already survived and thrived. Herein, we provide you with the hard-won tips, tools, and insights that helped us to excel during those four grueling years. Beyond providing study tips, we draw on inspiration from fields like psychology, neuroscience, education, business, and even self-help to assemble a complete guide to accelerate your development as a medical student and future physician. You’ll even get our personal recommendations for outside resources, such as specific websites and apps, that gave us a leg-up during medical school. NO OTHER book offers this much information, assembled together in one place, and without the fluff. Below are some of the key topics we chose to cover:- Study tips to help you sail through classes - Test-taking strategies to help you ace the USMLE and/or COMLEX board exams- Accelerated learning techniques like speed reading, memory palaces, and mind mapping- Time-management and productivity hacks- Tools for self-assessment to track your development- Advice on wellness, work-life balance, and burnout prevention Still not convinced? Read This Before Medical School: How to Study Smarter and Live Better While Excelling in Class and on your USMLE or COMLEX Board Exams by Chase DiMarco Review

The book is in great condition and delivered on time like promised. The one-star review is due solely to the content of this book. The structure of the book is similar to this: The authors introduce several techniques in one to a few paragraphs at the beginning of a chapter/subsection that might improve performance in medical school and then the rest of the discussion is dominated by advertisements of their own efforts and personal success. While it is nice that they have succeeded, the tone of the writing more closely resembles that of a braggart than of a didactic leader. They advertise theirs and others' medical entrepreneurship ventures by using buzzwords like "preventing burnout", "high-yield", and "work-life balance" to sell other people's products, apps, or websites. It closely resembles an ongoing advertisement. This book does not seem to provide the unadulterated reflections of someone who has gone through medical school interested in improving the experience of another. The main author is in fact still in medical school! The references are website links (copied and pasted URL links) to journal articles. One cannot determine the article by looking at the URL, and if you wanted to access the resource, you would have to grab your device and type in the browser "h-t-t-p...." to pull up the article that they referenced. The articles they referenced may or may not require you to have a paid subscription to that journal to read. Lastly, you can tell this book is rushed and poorly reviewed and edited because THEY COPIED AND PASTED THE EXACT SAME SUBSECTION ONE PAGE AFTER ORIGINALLY INTRODUCING IT. To see this yourself, go to the closing remarks at the end of part 3. Also, this book spends much time on transitions and summaries that one can skip (if you so chose to do so) entire paragraphs and miss absolutely nothing of contribution to the message of the book.

I find medical mnemonics and memory training fascinating. Besides Sketchy and Picmonic it’s difficult to come by mnemonics and visual training specific for medicine. This, coupled with the speed reading and evidence-based strategies mentioned throughout the book, make this a highly valuable resource for students. This is definitely a unique and useful approach to studying.

The book is in great condition! BRAVO as it was delivered by the seller to arrive on time as promised. My TWO-STAR review is based solely to the content of this book. First, the structure of the book. The Table of Contents list the last page as page 248; however, the last page of the book is numbered as page 224. The misnumbering is confusing when you want to search a specific topic/subject listed in the Table of Contents. Secondly, if you insist upon studying I suggest you begin by taking a look at your required books for the year. Most have introductory chapters which would be a great review. Brush up on some basic biochemistry and even consider reviewing your physiology notes? The first year will be a lot of memorization. The true critical thought/problem solving type questions come a little later.

This book has absolutely been one of the most informative I’ve seen on the subject. The dozens of tips and recommendations are going to save me countless hours each week that I can direct back into studying or living life! I’ve also never seen such an easy yet robust tool as the MedEdge Method test-taking strategy. I’d recommend this to any students going into or already in medicine if they really want to understand their learning capabilities and maximize their results.

We sincerely appreciate the candid feedback provided thus far.Throughout 2020, we reviewed the feedback from early readers and updated the book accordingly. We were able to make small improvements here and there based on the vast majority of the criticism received. We intend to keep updating and improving the product with each iteration.Sincerely,Greg, Chase, and TedP.S. We had to leave a star rating in order to post this note under the reviews section. We decided on four stars because that was the average rating we've received thus far (and there will always be room for improvement).
