Great book
Excellent shape; fairly fast delivery
I have lived in a small Southern town most of my life. Being a teacher for over 30 years, I have watched thousands of young people who dreamed of operating a farm. Most were told not to even try. Older folks were selling their farms to developers, and their grandparents' land now sprouts only houses. Of the many who tried to farm, few succeeded -not because they weren't very hard-working and very competent. The sad case is that although at least 1 out of 20 Americans would LIKE to run a farm, the trend has been to eliminate most farms. This very readable book is about the struggle of all those people who want to farm yet find they just cannot make it. Charlie Thompson himself had tried to farm, and his biographical writing makes a very compelling story. You learn along the way all the injustices faced by the people running small-scale farms in the US. You also get some hope, because Thompson is fighting along with others to change policies and help those small farmers. I highly recommend this book!
I borrowed this book from my local library. It is a beaming light, or perhaps more accurately a distress signal, that shines on the state of the American farmer. Beautifully written and a must read for anyone that eats food.
