Dark State: A Novel of the Merchant Princes Multiverse (Empire Games, Book II) by Charles Stross Review

This probably deserves a higher rating than I'm giving it: I read it in a single sitting, staying up far past my bedtime. It's quite the page-turner.However, approximately nothing gets resolved. Two new plot threads are introduced, and only one gets to a reasonable stopping point. The other gets the equivalent of a season finale "to be continued..." Everything else is left just as in the middle of the action as it started, albeit advanced by 300 pages.I'd put off getting this until the next one releases.

I found recent entries in the main Merchant Princes Multiverse series were not doing it for me,but the memory of Stross's writing when he's on kept me reading his samples and finally I was rewarded with this offshoot series. Empire Games, the first entry in this series introduced several new characters that picked up the pace and made me a fan. Dark State is the second entry and and both books have a setting with multiple parallel worlds that differ mildly or wildly from our own. The major powers of two fairly similar worlds are close to a nuclear confrontation across dimensions unless more sane voices on each side can get sufficient purchase to ease the tensions. Rita, the main protagonist, by a combination of wrong/right place at the wrong/right time and a birth mother that is a major player in the enemy's world is at the center of the action. With the help of her Stasi trained grandfather and her take charge girlfriend she struggles to find a way out that will leave her conscience and her loved ones in one piece. Not gonna be easy and judging from the cliff hanger ending its gonna take at least another book more before we find out. The first 3/4 of the book is setup and just as it threatens to drag Stross adroitly shifts gears and we get serious action as the book ends on a high note. Sympathetic characters are the book's main strength followed by realistic depiction of the various worlds the action takes place in. Stross hits his stride again with this one.

Time travel - of a sort. But really parallel universes. Slightly implausible technology in the science part of the science fiction. But what do we know? Any technology sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic. This series is a fantastic romp through politics, spy-craft and technology that is well written and engrossing. At the same time, the author doesn't mince words about what could go wrong with the world and makes it abundantly clear that whatever they do, humans have an inordinate talent for making a mess of things. So in parallel to the science, this is an exercise in alternative sociologies.Looking forward to the next volume (which, based on the nicely done recaps in the already published volumes, will mean I won't have to read the lot again!)That's another point - somehow, the author manages to avoid making the recaps irritating, as they can be in some series. Nicely done

Dark State (Empire Games #2) by Charles StrossAye yup. The excrement is starting to interact with the impeller in this second of however many books in the series. During the first, Charlie did a great job of introducing us to new folks, and reintroducing us and getting us caught up to our old friends. All, now we're off the porch and running with the big dogs! The world building, and cultures, are done very well. And yes, I can se where America could be exactly that in a very near future. It would be a very dismal future indeed. But I digress. The characters drive the plot, and drive it well. Even when they have no fracking idea what or why they are doing it! Cinflicting loyalties, plots and subplots, intrigue, politics, and a bit of mayhem thrown in for good measure. Charlie Stross is on top of his game, and now I really need the next hit. Err... book.

The second book of this series was almost as engrossing as the first, and the first book made me upgrade Stross to the first rank of SF writers in my opinion, right up there with Niven, Banks, Asimov, Gibson and that whole crew of topnotch SF writers. Here Stross continues the story he started in Empire Games, and he keeps the pressure going and adds new characters and subplots and generaly had me entirely engrossed in the story, and that rarely happens in the second book in a series. There's the same combination of Cold War chills and thrills with alternate world weirdness that keeps you guessing about what's coming and characters to keep you interested. So, yeah ... I'd recommend the hell out of it.
