Detour Man: Mystery, Murder, Fear, Desire, Terrorism (Vinnie Briggs Mystery Book 2) by Charles Puccia Review

I should start off by saying that this is the first book I read from this author so my thoughts before reading are based on what I've come to expect based on other books of the genre. For example mysteries tend to not be funny. Acerbic, critical, sarcastic sure. But just funny, not so much. And when this one makes me laugh within the first page I find it a pleasant surprise. Of course the classification of that funny could be argued so I'll give you two of my laugh out loud moments and you can judge for yourself: “ ...didn't reveal a serious crime soon, Vinnie was prepared to commit one just to end the interview” also “Vinnie Briggs did as he did with all the Briggs Investigative Group (BIG) clients, he made circles with smiley faces on his pad, sometimes adding a mop of curly hair. When really bored, he drew triangles. As founder and chief private investigator of BIG, scribbling impressed corporate clients, luring them to believe he thought everything they said mattered. It really didn't, but it stroked the egos of self-important blowhards with noses stuck so high they rubbed snot on his ceiling.”Another way this caught me off guard was that this all starts with a noncase or so Vinnie makes it out to be. But I still thought this was going to be a murder mystery of the guy Gunter began this book talking about, but then within a few pages the murderers are talking about the murder with enough detail that we know it's the same guy and more or less why they killed him, oh and they're planning something that involves a trigger so uuhh, bomb? What? Talk about taking a turn. Then another murder happens (I won't spoil who more than to say that *that one's* why is also revealed soon afterwords) and I'm left wondering what the mystery is suppose to be. Oh boy, I should've paid more attention to the bomb tangent but again no spoilers (or no major ones because I'm sure there's someone out there who doesn't go trigger = bomb).Overall I was just most impressed by how this story unravels from mystery A to mystery B to Ooh, **mystery?** all the while keeping me interested. That said, it also made me frustrated with the legal system as well as cops who live by “everybody is guilty of something, even if it's not the thing they're arrested for” to paraphrase one of the detectives. Just uuh who *wants* to read about the ugliness of humanity? But that's more my personal taste. Moving back to the book. This was also surprisingly emotional... so I guess the moral of the story was that I didn't expect any of it?... Hm. But back to the emotional part, this tale's MC in many ways was Gunter who was already a man suffering but then his world is turned even more upside down. He gets what he thinks is a shot at romance and then some actual romance (but certainly not in the romance novel sense) then it all gets a LOT worse before it gets better and if you didn't feel for the guy on learning who the Detour Man is to him (or how that IS the root of a lot of the “evil”) then you sure as hell *will* when you get to the climax of the expatriots (and no I won't spoil it by saying more). But I like to think that Gunter gets his HEA and I also have to add the compliment that the last few lines of the book are some that gave me an enormous amount of closure (though I'm sure it's nothing compared to his).So to conclude I liked this story. However that said, based on enjoyment I'd rate this 3 stars (I liked it but it's a little too psychologically heavy for me to LIKE it) but I bumped it up a star to show that I appreciate the effort that the story made to encompass such complex topics as body dysmorphia, family obligation, prejudice (in its many forms) and how the past informs who we are (and become). All those things are put in a sensitive, real and I think digestible way. However because of the not so cheerful subjects this tackles I think I would only recommend this to mature readers who like mysteries with some romance and won't shy away from heavier topics. I wouldn't really call this a light read but it's also not the heaviest thing I've ever gone through, so I suppose I can only classify it as something like average (which if you think about it is still kind of vague, but well) while also adding that those who can't handle fictional death, injustices or psychological issues should beware.

So this is the first time I am reading well actually hearing a book by this author. The audio version of this book is absolutely fantastic. I don’t like to read super long books for fun because that’s just me personally but, the audiobook made this feel like it was a Liam Neeson taken movie book rendition chock full of mystery. The story follows a private investigators’ friend Gunter who battles with fear and isolation and daily life struggles. Gunter becomes the prime suspect after witnessing a mugging that eventually lead to a murder. So Vinnie Briggs is now on the hunt to exonerate his friend Gunter before he gets hang for a crime that he did not commit. There are numerous plot twists in the story that definitely helps keeps you entertained throughout the story. Regardless, it’s a great read! Get the audiobook version today I promise you won’t regret it.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book and by Gunter’s character. I feel like they initially make him out to look more delicate than he actually is then by the end of it he shows more strength. Plot twists, for sure! I won’t spoil but you think you’re learning about one crime then plot twist, it’s something new. There’s some moments of comic relief which are always a nice add when not overdone. I’d have to say this is a well written mystery with solid characters that keep you engaged the whole time. I’m looking forward to reading more Vinnie Briggs mysteries.

My brother recommended this book to me and it has been probably one of the most well written book’s I’ve experienced during this pandemic where I am finding myself reading a lot. An amazing mystery and word play that keeps you going to the next page. I enjoyed reading this book during quarantine and it helped me get through the day because the story is well put together. Also, help someone out and recommend this book to them... they will enjoy and like i did!

I was looking for recommendations on a book series/author that could hold my attention and that would give me the option to list to the audiobook. Detour Man fulfilled both these requirements for me. Once I started reading, I was hooked and couldn't put it down. The audio was awesome (the narrator has a nice voice!) and the book kept me guessing until the end.
