On Roads That Echo: A Bicycle Journey Through Asia and Africa by Charlie Walker Review
A mix of different modes of transportation are used and found some of them more interesting than the bicycle element,s . A wide variety of places travelled through. Don't know if I would duplicate the same journey or encourage anyone else to either but found it to be very interesting. Well worth the time spent reading it !!!
Charlie takes the reader along as he encounters a plethora of nearly unbelievable situations. I found myself bouncing between emotions frequently: Wonder, at the vast, empty, quiet spaces he travels; humor, at the sometimes silly people and circumstances encountered; incredulity at some of outlandish, foolhardy decisions he makes; deep sadness and anger at the evil inflicted on people even now in some places of the world; relief as Charlie finally escapes dangerous locales.This will captivate you. I found it hard to put down--a tired cliche, but used in its purest intent regarding this book. To top it off, it is very well written, in a style that reads closer to travel tomes of the past, and refreshingly including vocabulary missing from most such books in modern times.
I had my safari going full time to understand exactly where he was at all times . Author is likeable, real, and provided an honest range of emotions throughout this travel saga. Furthermore, his educational lessons were perfectly incorporated. He kept his writing tight, on-point with just the right amount of on-site and Brittish humor. Most significant to me was just how physically , emotionally, and spiritually difficult his years long journey demanded of him. While I'm 70 I dreamed of being with him. Truth is I couldn't have lasted one day . Charlie is humble, but confident. His nature is allowing him to survive travelling, writing , and living a most rare life.
Charlie's second book even better than the first. A great adventure told in an interesting educational manner. Read this book and learn a little world history and much about human nature. His eternal optimism rarely flags through his many risk taking days on the road of his four year trek!! Good adventure reading .
This book seems at the on set to be informative about different countries and cultures. Historical footnotes may keep you busy looking up information.
