Brown Sugar Babe by Charlotte Watson Sherman,Akem Review

So I didn’t like this book because somewhere in the beginning it has a quote of the child saying “I don’t want to be beown” and my issue lies here:I understand the book is based on the notion of making young black children love their blackness but I’d you have a black son or daughter who has NEVER said anything even remotely close to not wanting to be brown and then they hear in a book of a black child just randomly saying “I don’t want to brown” makes them then start to think “well is being brown a bad thing” because in my household all I do is uplift my 4 year old chocolate girl and make sure she understands the value of self love. I do not want her growing up hating other races but I want her to first love herself and her own black beauty and all that comes with it, loving everyone else’s black beauty and knowing that she is extraordinary and should never want to look like anything else because if she thinks mommy is beautiful and mommy has brown skin and brown eyes she can think she’s just as beautiful because she truly is. I would never want my daughter to have it out on her head “being brown is bad” and I’m not saying this book did that I just really think the book could’ve been great without ever even adding that part in. You can tell a child “you’re hair is full and luscious, it is as strong as a lion’s mane” you don’t have to put in a child saying before that “I don’t like my nappy hai” because if a child has never even perceived themselves in a negative light but now they’ve seen in a book something that makes them then questions themselves just doesn’t sit right with me. I also didn’t think the book was very good in general but I wanted to buy more books with black characters for my children. I will be returning it. And it’s not that I’m sheltering my children. Before they grow up and get out into this nasty world and start experiencing prejudice and racism I want to first lift them up high into the sky with love and confidence and knowing their own self worth that way when someone ATTEMPTS to break it down they know better. They have no doubts. They see no flaws within. They take accountability and only exhibit what can be known as greatness,

I just got my copy today for my nieces, and I didn’t expect it to be so moving and affirming for me as an adult. I just keep reading and re-reading it and taking in all of the poetry and visuals. This books transcends time, generations of family trauma and love, and shows how complexly beautiful and rich the color brown is. I wish i had this to read as a child.

An important work for affirming Black children's lives! The poetic words of Charlotte Watson Sherman along with the stunning illustrations by Akem combine to make an amazing, much needed picture book!

One of the most important books of the year — a perfect solution to that moment every parent of brown-skinned children dreads, when that amazing child doubts their own beauty and worth. Gorgeous artwork and beautiful lyrical words. A celebration of brown sugar babes everywhere. Parents must have!!

The book is beautiful, the entire design is gorgeous. Also, the book is about providing positive affirmations for children.
