A Cruel Deception: A Bess Crawford Mystery (Bess Crawford Mysteries Book 11) by Charles Todd

Read Online and Download A Cruel Deception: A Bess Crawford Mystery (Bess Crawford Mysteries Book 11) by Charles Todd. “As always, Todd’s intense feelings for the traumatized survivors of war make one mother’s son the broken hero of an entire generation of lost souls.” — The New York Times Book ReviewIn the aftermath of World War I, English nurse Bess Crawford attempts to save a troubled officer from a mysterious killer in this eleventh book in the acclaimed Bess Crawford mystery series. The Armistice of November 1918 ended the fighting, but the Great War will not be over until a Peace Treaty is drawn up and signed by all parties involved. Representatives from the Allies are gathering in Paris, and already ominous signs of disagreement have appeared.Sister Bess Crawford, who has been working with the severely wounded in England in the war’s wake, is asked to carry out a personal mission in Paris for a Matron at the London headquarters of The Queen Alexandra’s. Bess is facing decisions about her own future, even as she searches for Lawrence Minton. When she finally locates him, instead of the intelligent, ambitious officer she expects, she finds a bitter and disturbed man who has abdicated his duties at the Peace Conference and is well on his way toward an addiction to opiates. Indeed, he tells her that he doesn’t care if he lives or dies, he only wants oblivion. But what has changed him? What is it that haunts him? It seems the truth is buried so deep in his mind that he can only relive it in wild nightmares. When Minton goes missing, bent on suicide, Bess must race to unlock his past before he succeeds. Reluctant to trust an officer in Minton’s regiment, a man with secrets of his own, and uncertain of the loyalties of Matron’s friends in Paris, Bess must rely on her own instincts and experience—and sometimes in desperation on a stranger who claims he never met Minton. Could whatever happened to Minton in Paris somehow be connected to his war? And why did he not kill Bess when he had the chance—then later, viciously attack her without warning? What is destroying Lieutenant Minton? Or is it who? And what horror will she have to confront, if she is to save him? In this, the eleventh novel in the award-winning Bess Crawford series, New York Times bestselling author Charles Todd delivers a rich and atmospheric portrait that illuminates the cost of war on human lives—the lingering pain and horror that no peace, no matter how earned, can assuage.

A Cruel Deception: A Bess Crawford Mystery (Bess Crawford Mysteries Book 11) by Charles Todd Review

I almost gave this book 1 star but gave it the benefit of the doubt primarily due to the body of work of this mother/son team. The plot was tedious really could not find a good reason why Bess Crawford would have cared about the person she was concerned about. I know I did not. The entire story was a non-starter for me and certainly not up to the standard of this writing team. I would have to think long and hard about purchasing another book in this series.

Another fascinating entry in the series. The mystery was compelling and interesting on so many levels. We're introduced to a number of wonderful new characters. They weren't all nice but they were all well written with depth and layers. Thrown into the deep end, with little support from those she's depended upon in the past, Bess relies on her intelligence, training as a nurse and upbringing to help her navigate a situation that is treacherous not only for herself and Lt. Minton, but others on the periphery. There's no Simon. Simon is mentioned frequently and I had my suspicions about Captain Jackson and a possible connection between them. Didn't see the one between Major Webb and Captain Barkley however. While not in Paris, Captain Barkley's presence was definitely felt. All told, those three compensated nicely for the missing Simon. (This time) Still, I'm hoping the next book will not only involve Simon but finally include some positive movement on the Simon/Bess front.Nice segue for the next book in the closing lines....now to wait another year......

Least favorite of Todd team of books starring the Amazing Bess. It is more a psychological novel than a mystery. It is inside Bess's head and I often had trouble following the guessing game she engaged in to make sense of her assignment. It was too much tell and not enough for me to see clearly. It lost so much momentum by covering the same ground with slight variations. It took until 75% of the way in that I felt some NEW finally happened that would advance the story. I am a determined and loyal fan of all things Todd so I kept going but did not really find myself doing my usual silent observation about what amazing writing team this was. how they create such great characters, (even Bess felt "flattened" and out of character too often.) The characters are usually alive for me. I love them in spite of when they do or are bad. And the loss of ability to track a story line, almost made me give up. I have read every other book this team writes, pre-buy their books. But this one almost lost me.

I have enjoyed reading this series about World War 1 nurse, Bess Crawford. Some are better than others. A Cruel Deception would not be considered my favorite, but at a time when I am desperate to read novels where the plot is not a side note to graphic sex and language, it was a nice read. After eleven novels, I wonder if the authors are worrying too much about writing these books for new-to-the series readers than for the devoted fans of Bess Crawford, her parents, Simon, and Mrs. Henshaw.I have two main issues that would apply to several of the Bess Crawford series. First, the final villains are not really characters in the novels. They are quick-fix resolutions to "who dun it?" I love to try to second-guess the author, analyze the clues and see if I can guess who is the bad guy or gal. None of that in these books.Second, I agree with some of the other reviews that question the relationships that have developed over the series. It would have been much more interesting if Simon was somehow participating in the peace talks and could help her along the way. Having her father so close, yet never having them share scenes is just not believable. Simon and Bess had reached such a good partnership is solving crimes with Bess in the lead. I never felt that she was subordinate or could not take care of herself. I definitely missed him in this novel. As a history buff, I do enjoy the detail regarding the years of the war and now post-war. As Americans, I think we forget that we only participated in this war for one-two years and that England faced such such human devastation after five years of turmoil. I empathize with Bess and all the characters she encounters and am drawn into the drama of the times as much as the mystery.

I had a few problems with this book. Bess and her father are both in Paris during the spring of 1919 and yet never spend any time together. She is an only child, whose father loves her. It isn’t realistic that he can’t spend an hour with her. And then there is the fact that she doesn’t trust her father to tell him the truth about what she is doing. That lack of trust doesn’t fit with what we know about their relationship. Yes. I know she had been on her own for 5 years, but that is a weak excuse, and I expect the author knows so. That is why he/she tried to explain it.And no Simon. NO Simon. What a major disappointment. The story was good but not great. When a book is easy for me to put down, the plot is not great. Still I enjoyed this book and hate that we will have to wait at least a year for another book—and hopefully the reappearance of Simon. His presence is an essential part of these books. If you enjoy these books, you should read the Winspear Massie Dobbs books. They are perfect in many ways, and they are captivating reading.
