Smoke & Mirrors (THIRDS Book 7) by Charlie Cochet Review

Since the book began w the kidnapping & torture of Dex while Sloan, Cael, and Ash waited anxiously for a hint of where he might be, you might think it’s strange that I found the book so engrossing. But my title is true, and the book was SO engrossing that I finished it in an afternoon. Read it straight through. No breaks, not even to pee. I couldn’t stop reading. I had to find out what happened next.There were old and new villains, a totally different take on an intelligence group, and finally, an explanation for all the strange little annoyances that have been bugging Dex over the last few books.Indeed, while in most of her books, at one point or another, a character will point out that Destructive Delta isn’t just a team it’s a “family,” I’M starting to feel like the characters are part of MY family (which is totally crazy and absurd, but when you’ve read 7 books in a row with the same characters, occasionally changing POV, you start to feel close to these people. And it’s just like real life. You have your favs: Ash, Dex, Sloan; the ones you like to read about: Cael, Calvin, Ethan, Seb, Hudson, Austen, Ash’s female partner which isnt leaping out of my head [so yes, I like reading about her in the sense of how she relates to Ash], Tony, Sparks [more in the sense that’s she’s scary as hell]; other members of team; and ones you dislike, like Taylor, bc he would not stop hitting on Dex, even when it was made clear Dex wasn’t interested (reminding me of every guy who ever hit on me in college); or the Dr from the Therian facility, etc.)And I do not lie. While I’ve been leaning towards Ash as my favorite character, just because, this book reminded me both why I loved Dex and Sloane as a couple; indeed why they’ve been the main couple of the series.I happen to a fairly fast reader so not everybody will get through the book as quickly as I did (some more quickly, most a bit slower). But it is so so worth every single moment. Bc the book is packed with so much information, action, and emotional upheaval that you will feel thoroughly wrecked by the end.But in a good way.

There are so many hidden agendas coming to light, it can make you dizzy. And, the whole hybrid thing is a bit shocking. But, I love these characters.

I swear this team just keeps you twisted up trying to follow them. This picks up where the last book ended and we find what happened to Dex.

My standard caveat - if you haven't read the first six books in this series, go immediately and read them, because otherwise you will not understand this book. And you need to understand it, because Cochet has turned in another consistently fantastic installment in her THIRDS series.Smoke and Mirrors will answer many questions, and raise many new ones. That a book can do this without frustrating the reader is a true testament to the care and talent that has gone into crafting the entire series. Dex and Sloane are dealing with a huge change in their lives and relationship. Their love for one another is constant, and their family of fellow THIRDS agents continue to have their backs. Reading the scenes showing the love and respect these people all have for one another is like curling up under a warm blanket. There's a comforting balance between scenes of chaos and peril and scenes of humor and love.There's not a lot to say without giving away plot details. Rest assured, by the end of this book, you will know the answers to several mysteries, and you'll be in a whole new world. But Dex, Sloane and their THIRDS family are still going strong, and you'll have more books coming soon to enjoy them.

Smoke & Mirrors marks a turning point in the THIRDS series. New dangers, new and even more dangerous enemies, life changing developments, even revelations that connect more than one character's past in crazy ways. Secrets were revealed and connections were made that changed everything. To say Smoke & Mirrors was a page turner would be putting it mildly.Thankfully, Smoke & Mirrors picked up where Catch a Tiger by the Tail left off (which I know I owe a review BTW - Yikes!) So... Smoke & Mirrors begins with a bang and doesn't slow down at all. It was full of emotion as well as action and more than a little danger. More than one character's life changed drastically in this book, which is going to make the rest of the series interesting to say the least.Although Smoke & Mirrors didn't end in a cliff hanger, it didn't make me want the next book in the series any less. There's a lot more in store for Sloane and Dex's team and others. Dex has a plan and Sloane is determined to back him up. Their main goal is to keep everyone they love and care about safe while bringing down a couple of really bad guys in the process. The novellas in this series are just as action packed as the full length novels, so Thick & Thin is next. Stay tuned!
