Your browser does not support HTML5 video. Â This is the second in a series of Classic Coloring books featuring the artwork of Charles Santore. The story is Margery Williams Bianco and the illustrations are by Charles Santore. Along with the story and the designs, there are thumbnail color pictures from the storybook on the inside front and back covers. That way, you can use similar colors if you so choose.The book is a larger than standard format. The designs are mostly done in grayscale with a small amount of line drawings in most of the designs.It is set up in true storybook style, with the text on the left hand side (back of page) and the illustration to the right. Some mediums will bleed through the page (see below), which will interfere with the text but if that doesn't bother you, you can treat the book as if the designs were one sided.This is what I found while coloring in the book and testing my coloring medium on the paper:23 Velveteen Rabbit inspired designs by Charles SantoreDesigns printed on one side of the page with storybook text on the back.Paper is white, every so slightly rough to touch, medium weight and non-perforatedGlue BoundDesigns stop short of the binding and have a framing line at the outer edgesBook opens easily to flat position for ease of coloring.Alcohol-based markers bleed through the pageWater-based markers and India ink markers leave a slight colorful shadow on the back of the page.Gel pens do not bleed through an left an indistinct shadow on the back of the page.Colored pencils did well with this paper. I tested both oil and wax based pencils. I was easily able to get good pigment with multiple layers of the same color. I also was able to layer multiple colors and blend well using a blender stick.

Must of received a reprint instead of original. Images are poor for grayscale, scratchy gray coloring looking like small child scribbled and of course the misspelling. Was going to color and give as a gift but it’s not worth the time. I’m sure the paper is not adequate either since it’s a reprint. Not sure if it’s returnable. Shameful

I would give five stars to The Velveteen Rabbit in a heartbeat - it's a classic for a reason and one of my all-time favorite children's books. It was a no-brainier that it would be under the tree for our son's first Christmas. I chose the board book, since he's a baby. I suppose I should have guessed that the board book version would be abridged, but the product description did not mention that - so the board book version loses a couple stars for being abridged. That said, the abridged version isn't terrible. It hits the plot points of the story and gets the same message across without changing the included text, but it omits a lot of details and much of the magic of the story. I would have given three stars to the board book, even in abridged form, if the conversation with the Skin Horse had been included in its entirety - but unfortunately, half of that beautiful passage was omitted. The board book is fine to read to a baby or toddler, but we'll be trading up for the entire story as soon as his attention span is long enough for the unabridged text.

The Velveteen Rabbit is so much more than merely a children's story; it is a spiritual awakening in your heart, chocked full of tidbits and big bits of wisdom just waiting to be recognized by the reader. First published in 1922, it is still an acclaimed treasure in 2020. Give yourself a blessing in your adulthood and keep a copy to peruse now and then; you may find things you missed. Open the book and see if the definition of 'Real' has evolved into more meaning, more depth.
