Mission Tango: A Gripping Hunt for A Deadly Terrorist by a Mossad Agent (David Avivi Thriller Book 1) by Charlie Wolfe Review

Israeli author ‘Charlie Wolfe’ has as much mystery about his moniker as he does in his fine novels. We learn that ‘Charles Z. David’ is the pen name of a renowned nuclear scientist working for the Israeli Atomic Energy Commission and has written four scientific books, many articles in scientific journals, and has participated in international scientific conferences. His background certainly enhances his mystery thrillers! Of note, Charlie states, ‘My thrillers involve intriguing plots and conspiracies, combined with my scientific knowledge and professional experience. My main characters are intelligent, manipulative and very human. My writing is inspired by current events, and readers complain that the plots are shockingly realistic, and even frightening. I try to imagine the unimaginable and can only hope that my plots will remain in the realm of fiction.’The manner in which the author opens this novel indicates his elegance with prose as he introduces his antagonist: ‘Le Docteur was sitting in a quiet café overlooking Saint Medard Square and the roundabout at the bottom end of Rue Mouffetard, sipping his double espresso and enjoying a chocolate croissant. It was close to ten AM on a sunny Monday morning, and Parisians were out shopping for their favorite fresh products… The only thing that seemed out of place in the serene scene was the patrol of four heavily armed soldiers. Sergeant Jean-Claude…was a battle-hardened man who had seen military action in the Middle East, but the troops were fresh out of basic training who had never heard a shot fired in anger This was about to change shortly, as Le Docteur knew all too well…’ And this opens the tenor of the thriller to come. The author provides a fine synopsis to entice potential readers – ‘Le Docteur is a professor who, fed up with the ways of the Western world, and decides to establish a terrorist network to outperform ISIS and fight the enemies of Islam. The talented professor plants fear across Europe through several murderous attacks, leaving an entire continent paralyzed. In order to carry out his diabolic master plan, Le Docteur has recruited an Eastern German nuclear physicist to help him build an atom bomb that will shake the world and change the course of history forever. David Avivi, a senior officer in the Israeli Mossad, is leading the chase after the bloodthirsty terrorist band, aiming to capture its leader and prevent the impending catastrophe. As Europe faces nuclear disaster and the fate of hundreds of millions of people rests on his shoulders, David knows that any failure on his part will bring the whole world to an atrocious holy war.’Terrifying story, beautifully sculpted and fascinating, and one that further establishes the literary importance of this fine author – whatever his name may be! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, July 19

Whatever flaws we might identify or frustrations we might feel are trivial in comparison to a reader's pure joy in losing himself/herself in a narrative. When all the elements come together: an intriguing plot, thoughtful, profound themes, complex, troubling, characters, and language that make us shudder for its honesty, clarity, and confidence; we gratefully set all analysis aside and give ourselves up to the sheer magic of a great book. And for me, The Dreadful Tango in Paris is such a book. The Dreadful Tango in Paris is a well crafted mystery, thriller and suspense. In addition, I would imagine that all fans of this genre will love sinking their teeth into this one! This is my first time reading this author and I must say I was very impressed. The story had every element a good story should have. An exciting plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well illustrated scenes that really make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that's something I look for in a good book. The stage is set for Le Docteur, a French professor, who establishes ties with Al Qaeda and ISIS. With a twisted mind he desires to create a new Islamist world order by wreaking havoc and mayhem for humanity. His ferocious loathing for the West leads him to establish NEMESIS, a terrorist organization with the purpose of acting against communists, colonialists, Christians, and Jews. Using both conventional and non-conventional terrorist activities all over Europe, his intention is to cause worldwide fear and panic.“David Avivi, a senior Mossad official is called in to assist Claire Barthez, a senior French Foreign Service officer in pursuit of the terrorist ring. But can Le Docteur and his associates be found and stopped before they go underground or flee?” I’m afraid you’ll have to keep turning the pages for yourself to find out! This captivating and commendable work had me immersed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional skill when it comes to storytelling. There are twists and turns in this page turner that will take the reader on a riveting journey! It’s one of those stories that come along once in awhile that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader!I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Charles Z David in the future. I would definitely recommend this book. Five stars from me.

This book was really different in that it focused almost solely on the villains. Me Docteur was the only charismatic character to me. David Avivi had all the charisma of a thumb tack. Sex and a love story were thrown in but that was mostly on the villains side of things. David does sleep with a French agent but later doesn't feel comfortable letting her know what hotel he is staying in...what? It was anticlimactic and very random. 2 of the characters that half the book revolved around got about a 2 sentence send off. I'm not even sure what the bacteria storyline was all about because it was never used. This got a 3 because of the villains... The rest of it was disappointing. I'll give this series another chance but I'm more skeptical now. This book was definitely not gripping as the title describes but there is enough here to give you hope in the next book

And this writer is not a good one. I gather from his bio that he has some technical background, and probably can write a good technical manual or journal article. But this is popular fiction we are dealing with. Different style. Unfortunately the author's odd writing style and rather juvenile descriptive and dialogue skills killed it for me.There are plenty of other authors who could take a similar potentially interesting plot and make it a much more enjoyable story. I won't be reading the other books in this series.
