Gosh, dang it! I'm a prolific reader and I don't normally leave reviews, but with this book I must make an exception. I had just finished a series of procedural police stories that were beautifully written. When I did a quick search for my next read, Amazon recommended this author.I'm sure as this is a published author, folk like her work; however, I did not. I found the characters superficial and lacking substance. In fact, I tried to finish the book, but was so disappointed with the lack of character development, that I decided not to finish the book and leave a review warning others who might be of like mind.If you like Tana French, this is not the book for you. if you like Ruth Ware, this is not the book for you. If you like Peter Robinson, this is not the book for you.If you're looking for a mindless read on a beach holiday, you may like this book; however, if you're a fan if Nora Roberts, or Danielle Steele, this book ain't gonna cut it for you either.I once read that there's no such thing as a bad book, but just a book that isn't quite right for you, the reader.For me, the reader: ugh and double ugh. No background, no substance, no nada.
I have been a cop for 25 years. The majority of that time I served as a detective or supervising detectives from Gang Crimes to the coveted Robbery-Homicide Bureau. Historically, I’m not into police novels. I’m admittedly the worst person to sit with watching a police related tv show or movie as I tend to point out inaccuracies. But I have to admit this book sucked me in from cover to cover. I honestly HAD to read it quickly because when I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it and HAD to know the outcome. If Hollywood doesn’t jump on this, they’re stupid. Absolutely riveting! You won’t be disappointed.
It seems all of my favorite authors are in between publication dates so in desperation, thought I'd read some new authors - or new to me. I did not find this book to be fast-paced or breathtaking, as the reviews stated. And readers of Kendra Elliot or Melinda Leigh will NOT enjoy this book. The writing was not at all that interesting. As a matter of fact, I found the writing to be rather dull. The characters had been drawn they would be stick people. While the part of the story regarding serial killer/kidnapper/brother could have been a captivating reveal, it wasn't. And there was absolutely no suspense in Alyssa's capture of said criminal, who went against character to simply show up at her house making it easy for her to capture him. This killer had been easily evading the authorities and then - after he has plotted on how he will kill her family in great horrific detail - decides to just show up at her house? No, this really isn't worth the time to read.
Told from multiple perspectives including that of the killer, Cox quickly pulled me in to this heart-pounding, well-crafted thriller. The audiobook narrated by Kate Zane amped up the suspense, terror and characters in this intense tale.This is the first novel in the Detective Alyssa Wyatt series and Cox’s debut. Alyssa Wyatt is a coffee loving, tenacious detective driven by guilt that makes her the perfect detective to hunt down a brutal serial killer.What starts as an abduction case quickly morphs into the hunt for a serial killer as Detective Wyatt, her partner and their team piece together unsolved murders from the past.The author delivers this fast-paced, tightly woven tale from the perspectives of Alyssa Wyatt and that of the serial killer. There are a few perspectives from the victims which only amplifies the suspense. Kate Zane gave each character, victim and the killer their own voice. She easily delivered believable male and female voices.I slipped into the story and was drawn to Alyssa and her partner, Cord Roberts. Alyssa is direct and Cord’s more diplomatic and cordial approach meshed well with her personality.The victims and killer’s own story are dark and gritty. Delivered with just enough detail to set your mind skittering. How the author pulled Detective Wyatt into their narrative was twisted, brilliant and grounded with facts, threads and surprises.The author balances the darkness of the cases with the human side of her detectives, their unit and families allowing us access. Steeped in reality with situations ripped from headlines and parents’ worst fears.
Much as I wanted to like this one, it didn't work for me. It seems to be well written, but I didn't find anything here to differ from the dozens of other procedurals I've read this year. Alyssa Wyatt is a carbon copy of every other female law enforcement protagonist out there. She's the usual headstrong firecracker type, partnered up with a laid back male counterpart who is the voice of reason in the duo. Multiple hints are dropped throughout about some dark childhood trauma she went through that I have no doubt would have ended up being directly related to the villainous killer of the piece. Can't say for sure because I'll admit I didn't finish this.With my Kindle's enormous backlog of unread novels, I have a self imposed rule that if a story doesn't get my interest by 20% in, I bail on it. I think that's more then a reasonable shot for an author to rope me in, but it just didn't happen here.
