Hell & High Water (THIRDS Book 1) by Charlie Cochet

Read Online and Download Hell & High Water (THIRDS Book 1) by Charlie Cochet. Action. Comedy. Romance. And that one weird guy. When homicide detective Dexter J. Daley's testimony helps send his partner away for murder, the consequences - and the media frenzy - aren't far behind. He soon finds himself sans boyfriend, sans friends, and, after an unpleasant encounter in a parking garage after the trial, he's lucky he doesn't find himself sans teeth. Dex fears he'll get transferred from the Human Police Force's Sixth Precinct, or worse, get dismissed. Instead, his adoptive father - a sergeant at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron otherwise known as the THIRDS - pulls a few strings, and Dex gets recruited as a Defense Agent.Dex is determined to get his life back on track and eager to get started in his new job. But his first meeting with Team Leader Sloane Brodie, who also happens to be his new jaguar Therian partner, turns disastrous. When the team is called to investigate the murders of three HumaniTherian activists, it soon becomes clear to Dex that getting his partner and the rest of the tightknit team to accept him will be a lot harder than catching the killer - and every bit as dangerous.

Hell & High Water (THIRDS Book 1) by Charlie Cochet Review

I'm always on the lookout for good queer books, and when I saw a deal to snag this one--honestly, I wasn't sure. I wavered, and finally gave in to the allure of that totally awesome cover. What I expected was--well, I expected the "sad queers" cliche. I expected a wimpy guy and an "alpha" for him to drool over. I expected to either put it down two chapters in, or slog through pointless sex scenes digging for plot, and come to a disappointing ending that was really just a hook for the series. What I got was a snarky, kick butt young man who stole my heart almost instantly. Dex steals the show, without sidelining the plot or background and side characters. The author skillfully delivers the pasts of the characters in bite-sized pieces, slipping information into just the right places, building world and characters in a pleasantly organic fashion. The only "info dump" worldbuilding is a very short prologue, and then you're with Dex, and it's wonderful. The romance is sudden but not instant, and it doesn't feel forced. Dex and Sloane are both wonderfully clever, strong individuals who stabs on their own two feet. The cast is filled out with characters who feel 3D, who have personalities and hobbies and aren't just background. There are mentions of lesbians and it's neither pointed nor too blase; it doesn't feel like they're there just so the author can point at them and say they're there. There's women in here, and they may not be center stage, but they matter. This book is funny, and it balances the heaviness of the plot with lighthearted banter, with Dex being a warm and caring guy, with people being jerks for a reason, not just because the plot needed some jerks. There's no doormat characters, and no one is a wimp, honestly, without it being unreasonably packed with unreasonably physically strong individuals. As a person who doesn't much care about sex scenes (I know, what the heck am I doing in this genre?) the scenes are good, "steamy," but they don't take over the book.Is this a hook for the series? Absolutely, but only because it's interesting enough to make you want more. You can read this and be done, without it grinding on you. It leaves you wanting more without taking away from the book.A fun read I'd recommend to anyone who likes action, romance, and gay bundled together with plenty of humor and jokes that are both dirty and goofy, at just the right moments.Honestly, I'd read this just for Dex. He's wonderful. But the rest of the characters are wonderful too.

I give this book a solid 'meh'. I wasn't horrible. It wasn't good. It was just meh. Everything about it - the characters, the plot, the writing - was meh.The Characters:The two MCs are Dex and Sloane. Dex is annoying. Sloane is boring.Dex is written like he's supposed to be a Tony DiNozzo (from NCIS) type. Charming, flirty, goofy, a bit obnoxious, but still a very capable detective when it comes down to it. Unfortunately Dex comes across light on the charming and capable, and rather heavy on the goofy and obnoxious. He is incredibly immature and unprofessional (with absolutely no consequences for his inappropriate actions), and he has very little charm to make up for his personality shortcomings. I'm not against flawed characters by any means, but Dex didn't come across as purposefully flawed. He came across as the-author-tried-to-make-him-awesome-and-failed.Sloane, on the other hand, is your standard jerk-alpha-male-who-is-actually-a-softie-and-was-only-ever-a-jerk-because-of-his-tragic-backstory. There isn't really anything that sets him apart from any other standard alpha male, save for the fact that he's a bit more mopey than most.My biggest issue with Sloane and Dex, though, was their lack of chemistry. Oh, they were sexually attracted to each other all right. There are plenty of mentions from each character about how nice he found the other's bod. But that's all. There was very little emotional bonding/connecting. We got a few throwaway lines about how Dex was able to make Sloane smile, but that was the extent of it. Honestly, they spent most of the book annoyed at each other. It was very hard to root for them as a couple when I couldn't even work out why they wanted to be together. The background characters aren't even characters so much as they're cardboard cutouts with a name and, if they're lucky, a singular character trait slapped on. The Mean One. The Quiet One. The Nerdy One. They're not really relevant, important, or memorable in any way.The Plot:The plot is your standard crime drama plot. There's a crime, and this team of super awesome hunks has to solve it and catch the bad guy. Unfortunately, the plot was so predictable that if these detectives were real, I would have some SERIOUS concerns about their crime solving skills (or lack thereof). It was one of the biggest, most complicated cases that this top-notch crime fighting squad had ever seen . . . yet I and other reviewers had it figured out from the very beginning. The Writing:The writing was alright. The book wasn't filled with huge, glaring grammar or spelling errors which was nice. The story was easily understandable. It all flowed. My main issue with the writing was the way the author chose to describe things. Every single location was described in such complete detail that I'm honestly surprised the author didn't include exact dimensions/measurements of every piece of furniture in each room. They weren't even pretty/poetic descriptions like some authors can pull off. It was all 'in the center of the room there is a white couch. On the leftmost cushion of the white couch is a red pillow. to the left of the white couch is a brown table. on top of the brown table is a lamp. behind the couch is a television. to the right of the television is shelves. on the shelves there is this, this, and this.' None of these things were relevant to the plot, mind you. Just really dull scene setting. I ended up skimming through a lotttt of paragraphs trying to skip past the endless descriptions of things.Overall, I had a bit of a hard time caring about the characters/the plot/any of it, and so finishing this book was kind of a struggle. Still, I *was* able to finish. It definitely wasn't so-horrible-I-can't-even-get-through-it levels of struggle. If I had known what I know now before buying this book, would I have spent money on it? No. But am I cringing in regret at the fact that I did spend money? Also no.Like I said: it wasn't awful. It wasn't amazing. It was meh.
