Around or after 4:00 p.m. that day, a clerk at Renberg’s clothing store on the first floor of the Drexel Building in Tulsa heard a woman scream. Turning in the direction of the scream, he saw a young black man running from the building. Going to the elevator, the clerk found the white elevator operator, 17-year-old Sarah Page, crying and distraught. The clerk concluded that she had been assaulted by the black man he saw running a few moments earlier and called the police. Those facts are just about the only things people agree on when it comes to the riot in Tulsa in 1921. By the time the unrest ended, an unknown number of Tulsa’s black citizens were dead, over 800 people were injured, and what had been the wealthiest black community in the United States had been laid to waste. In the days after the riot, a group formed to work on rebuilding the Greenwood neighborhood, which had been all but destroyed. The former mayor of Tulsa, Judge J. Martin, declared, “Tulsa can only redeem herself from the country-wide shame and humiliation into which she is today plunged by complete restitution and rehabilitation of the destroyed black belt. The rest of the United States must know that the real citizenship of Tulsa weeps at this unspeakable crime and will make good the damage, so far as it can be done, to the last penny.”However, financial assistance would be slow in coming, a jury would find that black mobs were responsible for the damage, and not a single person was ever convicted as a result of the riot. Indeed, given that racist violence directed at blacks was the norm in the Jim Crow South, and accusations of black teens or adults violating young white girls were often accepted without evidence, people barely batted an eye at the damage wrought by the riot, which would remain largely overlooked for almost 70 years. The Tulsa Massacre of 1921: The Controversial History and Legacy of America’s Worst Race Riot by Charles River Editors Review

This is a difficult subject to review, but every American should know about the Tulsa Riots of 1921, that killed an estimated 300 black Americans out of a population of 10,000 black Americans and was devastating in destroying the entire black Greenwood Community, adjacent to Tulsa. The book gives a brief factual synopsis of the facts of the riot, but does not disclose the depth and detail of the riot's terror experienced by these American blacks at the hands of white American rioters. The book does cover the systemic segregation and racism of Oklahoma at this period and the perceived offense that a prosperous black community created alongside a poorer white population. The biggest takeaway from the entire book is how a Biased Press can stir up class (political), miscegenation, and racial hatreds to the point of arson and murder over unproven facts. Race does not equal criminality. Though little talked about for decades because of shame and existing political machinery, the People of Oklahoma acknowledged the criminality of the riot in 2011 as the book's closing chapter explains. The reviewer is a white American who embraces the entire truth of our Country's existence both bad and good, in the hope that our Founding Ideals find full expression in our Present Society and peaceful coexistence of all Americans.

I was very surprised to see this book was only 40 pages. I thought I was accidentally sent the wrong item since it looks like a pamphlet. However, it was a very good read with lots of pictures. It is important to share this history with all you know. The truth of America's dirty history needs to be revealed and the sad fact that over 100 years later we still cannot come to grips with this barbaric atrocity is saddening and frustrating, to say the least!

It is eye opening that the media was as much of a virus on this country then as it is now. The Tulsa Tribune contributed to this event by publishing unverified reports. "Where the Tribune got the description of the incident that they ascribed to Sarah Page is unknown, since there is no known record of such a statement to the police. It is possible this was what they received from the store clerk, or one of the reporters may have simply made it up".More than likely made up to sell news papers.The charges against Dick Rowland were dropped, after the County Attorney received a letter from Sara Page stating she did not want to prosecute the case. In my opinion, this incident was caused by irresponsible reporting by the media. Just like what we have going on in The United States today.

This book covers a very terrible period in the history of OK. and the United States in a fair and balanced way. The historical facts were presented and when you get facts and not opinion from history, you hopefully learn and gain greater understanding. In a short time the reader is briefed on the background, history, environment, events and aftermath. This was a tragic event that should have never happened. Sadly we see something similar being played out in the streets of many cities today. Fear and anger sometimes lead people to commit horrible acts against other people, so tragic. Everyone needs to read book like this and learn from them. No, it isn't in-depth but it covers things well and if you want more detail there are other books available. I would recommend this book to everyone that wants to see what happens when racial bias (any bias) gets out of hand.
