Your Perfect Year: A Novel by Charlotte Lucas,Alison Layland Review
Your Perfect Year was originally written in German. The translation is at times stilted but mostly it reads well. The American reader will note immediately that Jonathan is calculating his run times in kilometers. The setting is in Hamburg, which is of course a major city in Germany and will be familiar to most Germans. But constant references to local landmarks will likely provide little context to the American reader. Then again, if you’ve been to Hamburg, you’re likely to enjoy the local flavor.Overall, the book is a light fluffy read. In alternating chapters, we follow the lives of bitter divorced wealthy publisher Jonathan and sweet thoughtful everyday girl Hannah who works with children. But the fluffiness of the book and the eventual coming together of the two protagonists is significantly marred by …BOTTOM LINE: Well written. Largely a “beach read†but for the obvious.HOT TIP: If you “share†your Family Library via your Prime account, you can collectively acquire and read more than one free book in each of your accounts.TRIGGER WARNING: Suicide. And not just in passing. It is a major plot point in the book and the search for the deceased covers many pages. (EDIT: Because of the many questions about the suicide, I have added details in the comments section.)
I finished the story. Yes, for the most part the ending was predictable. I chose the book because it was under the genre of romantic comedy. There was virtually no humor in the story, although there was a sort of romance. Also, I would not have chosen a story that heavily promoted tarot cards, and the virtues of rearranging one's life to correspond with the 'never wrong' fortune teller. Whatever. I can't say if the style felt stiff and dry because it was the translation or the original text, but it often felt like I was reading an accountant's To Do list. But, as I said, I finished the book.
This was an Amazon First Reads Book and I figured I would try it. I’m on page 40, which is a 10th of the way through the book. I read a lot and, although I have high literary standards, I have a very open mind. I can’t adequately describe how awful this is. I am not even going to waste my time to go into detail. I’ll just say—1. I have NO IDEA how this was even published 2. Why in the world did anyone review this above 1 or 2 stars—and 3. If it’s really a fantastic book, deserving of some of these reviews on Amazon, WHEN O WHEN does it get ‘good’????I’m not going to keep reading to find out...lots of other intriguing books out there.
This was my best Kindle First Read of Last couple years, it is a Nice book. Contrary to my experience with most recent modern fiction, I finished this book, feeling better for having read it. Finally, an author that does not need to sell by gratuitous sex, violence and foul language. The author does a solid job of weaving into the story, several scientifically proven aspects of positively reprogramming one's brain, around a character that benefited from some of the experiential techniques. The author cleanly uses temporal shift (not to excess) and smoothly merges the timelines, so one can follow "chance" encounters.
Because I couldn't put a 4 1\2 and I really recommend this lovely book. It was inspirational warm, even humorous. The characters, especially Hanna, got stuck in my heart. Try a sample, you'll be hooked in no time and will consider it time well spent.
