Society's long history of male hegemony and female subservience has not enhanced the natural qualities of the human race but rather distorted them, says Gilman, as can be seen in many of society's institutions. In separate chapters she discusses family, art, literature, games and sports, ethics and religion, education, fashion, law and government, crime and punishment, politics and warfare, and industry and economics. In each case she shows how the domineering male influence has caused grievous problems.

This is an essential read for anyone wishing to understand the basis of feminism and what it attempts to achieve. I cannot agree with absolutely everything written there, but quite a bit of it is still very pertinent today. The contentious parts will make for some good open discussion, regardless.Be prepared to read for a good while, though. It is a lengthy manuscript and the language is slightly more technical and intricate than that of the average book. I consider myself a voracious reader and yet it took me a good while to complete it.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman has interesting insights. I enjoy reading her works in general..

With one simple idea- that our society suffers from a sever sex imbalance especially when it comes to power. It's upsetting this was written 100 years ago and yet I am here still relating, but we have come a long way, and maybe if more read this book we'd get further still. Fully recommend!
