Charles Peters -- a Washington insider, journalist and publisher who has known the movers and shakers in Washington from his twenties into his nineties -- is uniquely well positioned to tell this story. And it is a riveting story, with example after example of how the American ideals of sacrifice and service of the Roosevelt era, were gradually corrupted to become the unbridled pursuit of self-interest, personal wealth and power that characterize the corporate-political complex today. And finally arriving at a vision at how a return to the better angels of American democracy could again become possible.

I'm writing this review in May 2017. Last night FBI Director James Comey was summarily fired by President (of the United States) Donald Trump. Charles Peters' important book suggests how we got here and how we can change and overcome the brewing tyranny.The book suggests that part of our cultural ill has to do with cultural elitism. He says that too many powerful people in recent years have engaged in a kind of fashionable snobbery. He suggests that this creates a cultural gap between "elite" journalists and political leaders and the kinds of working people who find elitist snobbery offensive (and ended up throwing a fit and delivering the White House to Donald Trump).There are many polemicists out there telling similar stories. But Mr. Peters is different in an important way. He offers ideas about how to be better. He offers his own experience working for John Kennedy as an example of the "get your hands on it and do a simple good job" attitude that is apparently missing from today's political leaders.I can't do all of his ideas justice in a short review. I hope that you read his book for yourself. If nothing else, you'll remember that amid all this craziness, there is another way.

I found this book most timely, as the gap between the wealthy and poor continues to grow here in the U.S. and the Democratic Party and progressives seem to be struggling to define a positive message and path forward. A senior reporter and senior editor of “The Washington Monthly” and author of several books examining our political system, the writer brings important insights into the political and cultural situation in our country today.As a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer myself I appreciated his involvement setting up the Peace Corps and serving as its first director of evaluation—he definitely appreciates the importance of global service. “We Do Our Part” seems an appropriate title as it was the slogan of FDR’s National Recovery Administration which mobilized the can-do spirit that allowed the U.S. to not only survive the Great Depression and win World War II, but to establish a number of monumental and historic infrastructure projects as well as basic democratic institutions which serve us well to this day.He touches on some of the most crucial issues impacting, and even threatening, our country’s democratic institutions like what’s become a “money making culture” in which 40% of the wealth is in the hands of only 1% of the population—where firing workers to increase profits has become more than acceptable and where the ratio of CEO to worker wages had gone from 42-1 in 1960 to 531-1 by the year 2,000.Peters provides concrete solutions to our country’s growing divisions by insisting our businesses go beyond focusing on corporate profits to what’s good for the workers and the public. He provides concrete solutions such as disallowing stock “buy backs” such as the $6.5 billion a year in buybacks by Walmart, which would have been enough to give each of its 1.4 billion U.S. workers a $4,642 raise for each of those years.He makes a call for “public servants” again focused on the needs of the public and not simply personal gain and going beyond the Reagan politics of “selfishness.” He also comes up with some provocative predictions, such as the role former President Barack Obama will have based on his choice of a future career which will have a symbolic impact, and finally he exhorts liberals to abandon their “elitist snobbery” which resulted in the abandonment of so many hard-working Americans looking for solutions to a dwindling manufacturing market and viable jobs for the future.The author has obviously witnessed drastic changes in our country firsthand. Ranging from the history of lobbying to the explosion of high-end fashion and travel reporting, this impressive book explains how we can consolidate the gains we have made while recapturing the generous spirit we have lost.

I've read Peters' "The Washington Monthly" for years, and have read his books. He continues to write with vigor, and still has lots to say about our past and our future. Not to be missed!!

This is a well thought out book. It is fair to all the events and people.It is a shame we have gotten to this divisive state but hopefully we can work out way out ofthe malaise. Unfortunately human history too often has required a real crisis to bring us together.
