The Bible in a Nutshell by Casper Rigsby

Read Online and Download The Bible in a Nutshell by Casper Rigsby. This is the story of the bible told like you've very likely never heard it told before. The bible is one the most highly regarded literary works of all time. A number one best-seller before there even was such a thing, the bible has long been the most purchased book in history. The problem is however, that most people haven't actually read the book, and those who have don't really understand a very fundamental fact about the bible. That fact being that the bible is in all honesty, simply a very bad work of fiction. In my version I strip away all the metaphysical mumbo-jumbo and all the supposedly miraculous nonsense, and tell the story for exactly what it is. The bible is nothing more than a collection of fictional works from the minds of deluded and possibly mentally ill men, which tells the story of the most powerful wizard ever to exist. This wizard just so happens to supposedly live in another dimension, and the bible offers the stories of how this extra-dimensional wizard used to supposedly interact with mankind.Told from the perspective offered here, the absolute ridiculousness of this book becomes painfully transparent. Leaving the reader to wonder how anyone could have ever believed it as fact.

The Bible in a Nutshell by Casper Rigsby Review

Casper Rigsby has written a number of other books/booklets (mostly derived from his blog), such as Holy Sh!t: The Insanity of Blind Faith (Volume 1) , Atheisting 101: 10 Steps to Proper Atheisting , The Engineer's Argument: A Philosophical Argument Against Intelligent Design , The Passion of the Atheist: Exploring the Emotional Aspects of Atheism , and Where's Your God Now? .He wrote in the Introduction to this 2014 booklet, “I’ve tried to make it humorous and something that could be fun to read. I’ve stripped away all of the philosophy and metaphor and simply offered the story as it is in its most basic form. Because of this, what I offer here is more a literary critique and artistic rendering than a theological examination… And what I want the reader to ask themselves is if this story is actually believable or not.” (Pg. 3)He says in the [Foreword], “What I’m going to offer here is a bit of blasphemy, or at least in the eyes of Christians it is. This is the story of the Bible broken down into sheer simplicity. Broken down and simplified in this manner it becomes abundantly apparent just how ridiculous the whole thing is. I hope you enjoy.” (Pg. 5) He refers to God as ‘the Wiz,’ for instance. He alternates chapters with Interludes, explaining, “These interlude pieces are not really necessary to understand the main storyline. I’ve offered them here because the stories I chose to highlight play a part in what makes up Christian dogma in many traditional sects. Even in offering those most notable of stories some will still object that I missed certain stories they find to be important. What I’ve offered here is a stripped down rendering of the most basic ideas one should be familiar with to understand the Bible. If you want to go into greater detail then, feel free to read the actual Bible as I’ve done many times over.” (Pg. 20)Later, he advises, “I want to make something clear. This is not a comprehensive and in depth dissection of the Bible. It is for all intents and purposes a cliff notes version written with a touch of humor. If you are honestly looking for a comprehensive dissection of the Bible, I highly recommend reading any one of the many books by author and theologian Bart Ehrman.” (Pg. 24)He concludes, “All that is presented here is bad fiction. And in the end that’s all the Bible is. It’s bad fiction. But many people out there have never heard the story laid out like this. They’ve been given the hard-nosed indoctrination that was drilled into their parents before them. They were told all their lives that this book of horrible fiction was actually the facts of real life… But if this blog series was their first introduction to Christianity, they almost certainly would never simply assume it was factually true. I hope all you heathens enjoyed my offering of ‘The Bible in a Nutshell,’ and I hope you had a few laughs along the way.” (Pg. 30)This booklet will be of most interest to atheists (particularly young ones, with a decided tendency towards sarcasm).

I loved it ! As a huge fan of Bart Ehrman, Richard Carrier and all the smaller YouTube Atheists like AronRa, I love whenever anyone shows the Bible for what it is. An ancient fairy tale. Since I was a young 'in and sunk my teeth into Hitchens, I an an avowed anti theist, not just an atheist. As in I believe religion does more harm than good and needs to be actively worked against. The author does a great job of bringing the Bible into reductio ad absurdum and it's a laugh riot. Reminds me of one of my favorite speeches where the speaker, discussing Jesus on the cross described it as thus- " So God, after creating people who were gonna sin, in order to forgive them for it, separated a part of himself and sent it to earth so that we could torture and kill himself, in the name of himself and sacrifice himself to himself in order to forgive us of the sins he set us up to sin ?"

This is a quick read with lots of irreverence to Christianity and belief in a Christina god; and probably to any other organized religion. What's cool about the book is the caustic humor the author uses to detail certain parts of the Old and New Testament. Author did not spend too much time on the New Testament, but provided enough fable to give a hearty showing of the New Testament. I would recommend this short book to anyone who may be questioning the data in the The Big Book.

What sarcasm? This is a very straight forward cliff notes version of the Bible. It does not come off as all that biased or satire. So unless one is a dyed in the wool theist it should not be considered all that offensive. At least no more than the Bible itself is offensive. It is a very quick read and covers most of the anecdotes.

This book made me laugh out loud several times. It is very compact (32 pages), so it was a quick read. I think it should be read by anyone that wants to know what the bible is about.
