Sunday, March 24, marks the 75th anniversary of The Great Escape, an elaborate affair aimed at getting 200 Allied prisoners of war out of Luft Stalag III and Nazi Germany occupied Europe. The German POW camp held some 1,200 Allied air force prisoners of war by March 1944. To effect their escape, the prisoners dug three tunnels, Tom, Dick, and Harry beginning a year prior to their escape attempt. Organization for such an endeavor put enormous pressure on those responsible for forging documents, tailoring uniforms and clothes, making maps and accomplishing a myriad of other important tasks. The night of 24/25 March 1944 was chosen for the escape. Only 76 prisoners of Stalag III managed to escape from the camp before the Germans intervened. All but three - two Norwegians and a Dutchman - were captured. Of those captured, the Gestapo murdered fifty on the orders of Adolph Hitler. The executions came as a shock to the prisoners, who realized that escape attempts now bore grave risks. Indeed, upon learning of the murders, both the British and Americans issued orders that their offices should no longer consider it their duty to escape. At the end of the war, a team of the RAF's Special Investigation Branch flew to Germany to identify and track down those responsible for murdering their men. Of the seventy-two Germans identified, twenty-six were tracked down by the RAF. Thirteen were sentenced to death by hanging. The reminder were given varying terms of imprisonment. Others were executed by the Russians and Czechs for other war crimes. A few committed suicide. The Great Escape victims thus obtained some justice.Charles Messenger's book is wonderfully researched, organized, written and illustrated. It's ten chapters capture all aspects of life (and death) in a German prisoner of war camp. Messenger's coverage, of not only the prisoners themselves but of their German captors as well, is enthralling. The book is packed with a myriad of high quality photographs and excellent diagrams depicting the camp, the barracks, the men, and the escape tunnels. One image, of an American Red Cross standard food parcel in February 1944 caught my attention. I have read a great deal about these parcels, that helped so many of our captured soldiers and officers to survive, but had never really seen an image actually showing what they contained. They were substantial - and a boon to Allied prisoners.This book is highly recommended for those interested in one of the most powerful and compelling stories of World War II. Charles Messenger has helped to enshrine the memory of those who paid the ultimate price trying to escape from Nazi captivity.
My father was in this camp and I have visited the site and museum in Zagan as well as Moosburg and the route they followed during their Long March when they evacuated Stalag Luft III. This book is an excellent depiction of the camp life based on what my dad told me and what I learned during my visit. I highly recommend this book with its excellent photos to anyone interested in WWII history on Europe.
